Gremlins strike again
Zenobian_84 replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
After extensive searching, apparently a loose radio wire was causing my short in the back end of the truck Finally, 100% solved. For anyone that sees this thread, let this be a lesson to you. Check everywhere for a short if you have one. -
Gremlins strike again
Zenobian_84 replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
:fs1: :headpop: okay, so that wasn't the answer to my problem.... the fuses blew again. and now I've got to get this thing fixed by tomorrow. The 10 fuse blows instantly, the 20 blows after 3 seconds, and a 30 sets the truck on fire.... lol. The fuse I'm referring to is the "parking light" I think. 75% sure its a short, 25% sure it could be a relay. What do I check for either? :dunno: Alsop, excuse the typing, my MJ cut me up pretty bad last night so thats why my typing is off in places Keep in mind I just wired some new tag lights last night in my bumper, and they're wired correctly with NEW wiring, but that didn't make the problem any worse or better. -
90's Sportruck Squiggly Graphics?
Zenobian_84 replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
 :brows: Thought about doing that, but not sure if I want to just yet. I have to get the truck repainted eventually and rust removed everywhere, so I'll probably run the hockey sticks 'til I get to that point. -

Nevermind this thread. Was able to find an answer to my own problem. The "parking light" fuse blew and I just replaced it, When it blew apparently, it didn't look it at first. Upon further inspection, I discovered it was. -
90's Sportruck Squiggly Graphics?

Darn, well, maybe one day I'll get around to getting some made. Looks a hell of a lot better than these faded hockey sticks I'm running. :ack: -

90's Sportruck Squiggly Graphics?
Zenobian_84 replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No, "SporTruck" was the name for the base model (nothing fancy) and the base model was around til the truck ended it's run in 92. Here's what I'm talking about. Image Not Found ----------------------------- Found the thread with the picture, but I'd like to know if there were any variations of this, and whether or not I have to custom make these graphics (99% probablilty) or possibly hit the dealership up for some.. :dunno: -
Know it's a longshot, and I'm going to get  for it :shake: :rotfl2: but I need a good picture of the squiggly "SporTruck" graphics on an MJ. Been searching the threads for one but I can't find the thread where I saw a good image of it. Also, I happen to like the squigglies very much. Although I may be the only one here.... :hmm: Anyone know where I could pick up a squiggly set?

Been working for the last three days  :D and happy I have a job now and everything, but I have problems. :headpop: Drove home a few days ago and my gauge lights suddenly all went out except for the dummy lights and the display warning/upshift lights. So everything looks like this (replaced the oil and temp sender but still have the old cluster in) Then, the next night I drove home, my tag lights apparently went out. :wall: THEN AGAIN, yesterday afternoon at dusk, the tail lights won't come on standby, only when I use the brakes or hazards do they come on. ---------- Current prognosis: - Cleaned up the ground behind the driver's tailight and scuffed it up a little to get the original paint off so it has some of that good ground to get to. Didn't make a difference. - Tested half my fuses with a test light, and only 3 came on. Checked all of them and although 4 of them are the wrong type for the slots they're in (am going to replace the wrong type ones), none of them are blown whatsoever. So what else could this be? I'm guessing probably a bad relay? If so, which one do I pull and how do I get it out?
-
Agreed. State to state may have different laws on how many lights you can have on a vehicle. Also, you should check on laws saying anything about how many lights can be above and below the hood. In MN, you can have no more than four forward lights on. However, you can have as many lights as you want above the windshield as long as they aren't on when you're on any pubic roads. Just this last week, I was with a friend in this Mustang and we were pulled over for the amount of lights on the front. Cop didn't say anything about the exhaust too loud, no plate on the front, windows too dark, or the fact that he was driving too fast. Local cops love to pull drivers over for anything as long as it isn't obvious. That said, I've ran into issues with breaking lights whether they were on the front or on the roof so I wouldn't run anything that costs too much. The lights on my truck are all single packaged tractor lights from Fleet Farm. All metal housing, crazy bright, crazier bright when bunched together, and at $11 each they are easily replaced if you break just one. Sadly, I don't find you're story that hard to believe..... In any case, most cops are  holes. That's pretty much how they act down here, to a T. Also, that's an extremely nice MJ you have there    Those lights and winch look pretty great on it!

Fog Light wiring tips?
Zenobian_84 replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks for the diagram  I know there was another topic on here about pulling the empty spacing covers for MJ's with no lights, power tranny, cargo lights, etc. And that the only way to get them out was carefully cutting it out. I'm going to be making a junkyard run soon, and wanted to know if I find an XJ or MJ with the fog light toggle button, can I remove the button and wiring from where it's housed? I'm assuming it's going to be set up like the cigarette lighter in that the front plate is unscrewable and the wiring connects into it from the back. Disconnect the wiring and you can take the whole thing off. Am I correct here? -
Really diggin' that light. :chillin:

Going to be getting some fog lights for the truck soon. Nothing extremely expensive or over the top, but something to have where I can have more buttons to play with inside the truck... :rotf: .... Just kidding, but seriously, I've been wanting some for a while, and especially since starting my final build. Just doing some pricing right now and figured might as well ask you guys here. Anyone got any preferred ones or ones that just look really cool? Sometimes I really wish I had a 4x4 instead of a 2WD so I could have a better excuse to get a roll-bar and get really creative with everything. :fs1: Also, I'm assuming that the bulb of the middle one on the top of this J10 is just Amber colored? Or do they sell fog lights with colored inserts? Also, is having amber colored fog lights legal, or are they designated for rescue type cars (ones with flashing lights and whatnot.)

Getting down to the wire now, not to mention hot and tired. Made good on the promise to myself to change the oil sender. Here's the new one in the slot. Pretty simple install. Thank god.. lol Then started on the de-rustification of my bed and cabin. Behind passenger side wheel well. Bad spot near on the bed near the cabin. Halfway done with most of the de-rusting. The POS sander I'm using; still, it's better than doing it by hand I suppose. :redX: Got the rust off the bad spot. Unfortunately, I didn't prime any of this because of super heat. This was 3 days ago. Came back to it last night before a rainstorm (my luck) and the bed had been through a pretty bad rainstorm shortly after I got the old rust off. Greeting me was new rust there to take it's place in the frame somewhat. Sanded all of it off while dark storm clouds loomed overhead.... Behind the well and on the edge of the top rail; primed and waiting it's 2nd or 3rd coat, I can't remember. Such a PITA to get that edge... Spot behind the driver's side. Driver's side rain rail. This one was pretty tricky to prime, but I did it with only a slight overspill onto the chrome railing. 3 coats on everything in the bed. Didn't bother to tape it off because it's just going to get sanded again when I go to seriously redo the entire bed. Good enough for a few months I suppose. Took some pictures of everything this morning to see how it is. Stands up pretty well. Good enough to last til the winter comes :rotf: Love working outside in the winter, but not very much in the summer unless I absolutely have to. You can see all the little lines I missed when I was doing this. It's frustrating me, but I can live with it until a later time. Still have to do the passenger side rail. ------------------------ Here's a possible timeframe for the things I need/want to get done. Aug. - Finish sanding rust from bed and prime it; finish installing new cluster :thwak: Also, go get pricing for front fog lighting. Keep looking for a job. Sept. - Go to junkyard and get front chrome trim to replace the ugly, splitting plastic black pieces I have. Do rust removal on passenger front wheel flair. Replace passenger side front fender (still on the fence with this one... :hmm: ) And finally, celebrate the 19th birthday. :D Nov./Dec. - Winter time rust removal in the cabin. Along with finishing everything up cabin wise I haven't already done. -
Fog Light wiring tips?
Zenobian_84 replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Was looking at the front of the bumper while doing some rust removal today. Stumbled across these holes. Picture is a little dark, but there's about 4x1/2 spacing between the 2 pairs of holes (give or take 1/4 in.) on each side of the front bumper. Am I correct that THESE are where factory fog lights would have gone? If so, do these just pop out? (If you look at the very first picture I posted, it seems that one of the Brush guard holes(?) still has a cover on it, where as the other one doesn't) -
yup  Ah... man, what a beauty. :D Wow, $3k? I like FSJ's and everything, but unless that truck had no rust on it, I sure wouldn't pay 3k. I remember right before I got the MJ I was going to head to the FL/GA border to pick up a 78 J10 4x4 with a 258 for $500. In hindsight, I probably should have.... After I got the MJ of course.

Fog Light wiring tips?
Zenobian_84 replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks for the schematic Don  Pretty simple layout and setup honestly  Well, these pictures saved me a lot of time scrounging through the truck. Appreciate it :clapping:  -
Same :rotf: although I'd like to get one for classic car shows and the occasional weekend driver.

This truck makes me 17 kinds of jealous.   Not even going to lie. Anyone else out there like FSJ's? :brows:  B112W4eliqs

Back with more "Comanche Madness". Ooooohhhh Yeaaahhhhh! (RIP Macho Man. :( ) Anyway, another insightful, albeit slow, update. This past Sunday, working in the blazing FL heat and humidity on the truck. Was a hot day, and I managed to get 2 things done at once. Swap out the temp sender and get even more of a tan. Also, it was so hot that my "Comanche" emblem fell right off the truck! You can see it dangling in the picture. I didn't even notice until later that afternoon  Before all that though I took the liberty of disassembling my dummy light cluster, except for the gas and speedometer gauges. Can't seem to reach my hand back there to take out the cable, so I'm going to have to take apart the kneeboard. Unless I decide to get under the truck and un-wrench the cable from the transmission housing. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of pictures here, since most of my day was spent sweating my  off. Not to mention my dad had the bright idea of "Son, It'd be a lot easier to take the oil sender out if you took out the Alternator." Knowing better, I said no, but somehow ended up going along with it. We dang near got the thing out after TWO EXTRA HOURS of cursing and swearing and going on a prayer. My dad is a pretty good wrencher, but when he used to have a 91 XJ, I don't think he ever did any sort of mechanical work on it. Needless to say, I decide to put everything back together, so that's pretty much why I didn't get the oil sender out. But I did go get me a 1 x 1/16 impact wrench to take it out, since out of all the tools I own, I don't have an open ended wrench that can get it out.... :wall: And it's also why I still have my entire cluster apart, warning light for my temp going through the roof, and no more progress done. Until today that is. Gave this fading beauty a shot of flat black to bring it back to life. Looks pretty good, but I'll have to see if it'll last, since I didn't put any primer on it first. :hmm: Started the long overdue process of rust removal on my bed. Good lord does this thing need a paintjob! And no, I'm not using a sander of any kind because I don't have one. That should change by beginning of next week though. Might go pick myself up a palm sander from Lowe's or some such. Would a palm sander be good enough to get surface rust off; because that's basically all everything is on the bed... :hmm: . Going to use the sander I will eventually get on these. Don't they sell these as rubber replacements or something? Just curious, as I doubt I'd be able to find some good metal ones, should mine head to the big junkyard in the sky. Another positive for today. Picked myself up a good toolbox for my multitude of tools. Sure does beat the hell out of carrying a full set of sockets, screwdrivers, rags, PB Blaster, and anything else I usually take out to the junkyards. :rotfl2: Not to mention it holds my badges I'm waiting to put back on the truck. -
Fog Light wiring tips?
Zenobian_84 replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Are either of those two plugs the ones I'm looking for? Also, you happen to have a picture of the cluster of wires I should look for on the bulkhead? I ask this because I'm assuming the setup is different for a 2.5's engine compartment than a 4.0's. Would it be possible to send me the diagram you refer to in this thread? http://www.comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=29833 -
Greetings all, just a few quick questions. Starting the long process of my serious MJ --> J10 restoration and need some pointers. I've seen front mounted fog lights not only on brush guards, but on the black plastic bumper on the front. Case in point, 87 MJ with no brush guard :( I figure I can drill out the wiring holes on the front and run the wiring to the battery though this empty space between the grille and radiator... But my questions are: 1. Would I have to wire this differently (Read: More Carefully) than I already mentioned since the wires would be in close proximity to the very hot radiator? 2. Anybody do this wiring differently (or possibly easier) than what my idea is? 3. Also, how about running it through the firewall? Or is there possibly already hookups for factory fog lights buried somewhere in the dash? (mine came with none, but I heard that sometimes the setup is there) :dunno:

:agree: Anyway, getting back to the thread.... 8) Did some rust removal of the top panel housing the display light. It was pretty grimy with minimal surface rust. About 1/4 way done here. One thing I did learn though, when doing /any/ rust removal, the coarser the sandpaper, the faster things get done. This is also very true if you're trying to do rust removal before a huge thunderstorm.... Moral of the story. When in doubt, go with something coarser than 100 grit, which is what I plan on getting tomorrow. :shake: Fully finished top panel. A bit dark due to lighting and crappy cell-phone camera. Plans for tomorrow: 1. Go get coarser sandpaper. 2. Get rest of original "Gun Metal" paint scheme off of the entire thing. 3. Prime it all with 2 coats. 4. Figure out new paint scheme.... Since I'm doing this as a combined Comanche/Sega showcase thing, I'm not entirely sure what color I should paint this case, or what designs I should go with. I was a serious time artist for 4 years in high school, so this kind of stuff comes pretty naturally to me, so that won't be a problem. Anyone got any ideas of what colors I should do? I'm partial to the Comanche Chief type of design.... :chillin:
