Project JDMJ... tube flares and new paint
Rymanrph replied to Blue XJ's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
You have a great looking truck. The tube flares came out fantastic. I'm sure you could sell a couple pairs if you offered them. -

Ok, so I got the belt to stop squeaking, yay. I have a loud clunking/popping sound in the front suspension. I only hear it when weight shifts from one side of the jeep to the other, so I'm thinking its the track bar, but I haven't had a good chance to look at and diagnose yet. -

I got the transmission and transfer case out (man, I forgot how much I hate doing that by myself). The drain and fill plugs on the BA 10/5..... :grrrr:  :fs2: . I got the drain one out, but not the fill yet. I have the new slave, but I think I'm done with the '88 for today. I think I'll go wash the '90. -

My switch panel is going nuts in my truck. It randomly works and you can hear it firing the door locks over and over just driving down the road. My passenger window will go down, but the driver side won't the door locks sometimes work. I've got a 4 door panel on there now, but would like the 2 door switches and cover if I can find them. Not being able to put the windows down wouldn't be so bad if my belt didn't scream every time I turn the AC on. I have no idea how much to tighten the tensioner bolt down. -

I put on the reflective ones. I haven't seen them at night yet, but they look completely black during the day. It might make flash photography a little more interesting though. -

I got the new windshield with the new molding in yesterday. I put the cowl and the wipers back on today. I also installed the Jeep letters on the tailgate. I had a bubble or two come up in the vinyl, so I'm hoping they'll go away after sitting in the sun a couple days. I still have the Comanche stickers to put on the doors and I have several MJ stickers that I'm not sure what I'm going to do with yet. -

I think I will. It needs some modification before it does. Right now its a little too wide and a little too tall and it needs some new mounting plates. I got a new windshield this morning with the newer '97 molding. I can't put the cowl (or the wipers) on for a day, so I'll take some pictures tomorrow. -
I was a little disappointed in the poor fitment despite the price. Something else I ran into was that with the pump on top of the tank, if you use the factory straps and j-bolts, the pump will contact the bottom of the bed. If you space the tank down, the j-bolts won't be long enough. I used some left over bump stops from a TJ spare tire mount to get the pump off the bottom of the bed and then used the longer j-bolts from my donor XJ. I'm not sure what Mike did, but just thought I'd give a heads up in case you ran into the same problem.

I got a little work done on the '88. I got the moldings and stripe off the passenger side. There is still ghost residue that I need to remove, but I think it looks a lot cleaner. When I removed the door handle, I broke the spring on the inside, so I swapped out the handle from the rear door of my '97 donor. I tried polishing the wheels, but I only got half way done on the rear one and quit. I ordered a new slave cylinder and it should be here tomorrow. I'll probably tackle that this weekend. -
Sounds like you have great plans for it. Keep us updated on your progress.

1990 Rebirth ('97 Conversion)

Here a couple after I got it back together at sunset in the rain: Those are a little grainy, so I'll get some better ones tomorrow. I still have a couple pieces I need to hit with a coat of krylon fusion before I put back on the truck, but this is it mostly done. I still have to put all my decals on as well and my new rear bumper isn't in yet. I'm having a new windshield put in this week as well. -

Those pictures were at the paint shop, so I don't know where the Honda stuff came from. Here's a tease: I started putting it back together, but the rain has temporarily stopped me. I found out that after working on my truck, the painter was inspired to buy a Comanche of his own. He fixes and sells wrecked Jeeps, so it will be his next project. I'll put up some more complete pictures either later today or tomorrow. -
I bought it a friend.

Back to our regularly scheduled build thread. PAINT. This is how I feel - :jump: -
Since having one Comanche is never enough, here is #2. Its a 1988 Pioneer Olympic edition. 4.0, 5 speed, 4wd. I got it from another Jeep lover across the state (about 10 hours of driving in one day) and I'm picking up where he left off. I'm not sure sure what the final plans for this truck is, but I know my dad has his eye on it, so we'll see. The good: Straight body, excellent rear bumper, has AC, relatively new carpet and headliner, bench seat in good condition, upgraded gauge cluster, open cooling system, hitch, rear slider window (not sure how it opens yet), nice wheels. The not so good: Tiny bit of rot on both rockers, decals and body moldings have seen their better days, tailgate needs paint (paint in general is average, but not bad for its age) and it appears to have a leaking slave cylinder, so I can't actually drive it yet. All in all, its a great platform and it has tons of potential. I had a great day driving with my dad and the previous owner is really excited that someone is going to be able to finish what he started fixing. Its been a fun day being a Comanche enthusiast. Now that I'm finishing up my '90, I've got another project to keep me busy.

Ok, so are you ready for it? Here is is: Now, I know what you're thinking. "He swapped all the old stuff on it, wussed out and painted it white." But you're wrong! Please say hello to Comanche #2. Its a 1988 Pioneer Olympic edition. 4.0, 5 speed, 4wd. I got it from another Jeep lover across the state and I'm picking up where he left off. I'm not sure sure what the final plans for this truck is, but I know my dad has his eye on it, so we'll see. I'll start another build thread and put some more pictures up. And if you stick around, there will be some other pictures in the this thread a little later tonight (Hint: they are a little more relevant to this thread). -

I stopped by the paint shop at lunch today. The body work on the truck is pretty much done. He'll be spraying the color on Saturday morning, so I can pick it up on Monday. I've asked for Tuesday and Wednesday off, so hopefully the weather will cooperate and I'll have a finished project to show you guys then. I've still got one surprise up my sleeve, but I can't share yet. Here are couple shots of the truck and a test spray on the front bumper. -
Also, the miters on the corners were not completely flush on mine. I filled them in with some black silicone just in case.
-
With as many people tackling that project, there will be a how to on this forum soon enough.
-
He gave me the name, but I wrote it down at work. I know its not the high end PPG stuff because that was something like $300 a quart (I could be wrong on that number cause I just don't remember exactly, but it was very expensive). This truck is going to be a daily driver, so I just want something that is going to look decent and hold up well.
-
My truck is at the paint shop and all the body work is done; its ready for color. My painter recommends just doing a single stage paint and says that a base/clear job will cost about $500 more. If it were your truck, would you spend the extra money for the base/clear finish?

I thought I was going to be helpful and let you know where I got mine, but its the same place that Mike got his.

Emissions test facilities are such a joke...
Rymanrph replied to beepbeepmyredjeep's topic in The Pub
This is the one time it seems that living in NC is an advantage. Any vehicle older than 95 (?) doesn't have to pass emissions, just a visual inspection. I'm really glad I don't have to worry about all of that. Good luck with yours.
