  1. I see. My springs don't look like they are sagging. Was thinking that if I went to the 1 ton springs that would give me a 3" lift. I am looking for another rear end with a different gear ratio. I have 3.07 gears. thinking of changing to 3.53 when converting it to a 4wd. The hole plan is to do a 3" lift, convert to 4wd, change gear ratio's, stiffen up area around steering box and upgrade the steering system. Not to much to ask is it? While I am at it freshen up the engine and put in a new clutch and pressure plate. I could have said rebuild the running gear I guess.
  2. Thanks for the diagrams. A question...how close is the comanche wiring to the cherokee wiring. and how many years are they the same or close?
  3. closest thing I came to a diesel boat was the swordfish 579, she was laid as a diesel but Rickover split her in half and yanked the diesels and put in a reactor. Stern tubes and 2 screws. what a boat.
  4. metric ton jeep
  5. like it
  6. What can you tell me about a 1-ton leaf spring for a mj? the good the bad and the ugly I got a lead on a pair for $200 on craigslist.
  7. Been out on forest fires most of the summer. now the fall is here and I cna devote some time to the truck, more things will be happening, I picked up a 89 cherokee for a donar vihile. parts will be changing soon. I still want to make a better sterring configuation then what I have now. I will only do a 3" lift over all. What can anyone tell me about a 1 ton rear left spring set up? I have a lead on one on craigslist.
  8. Rode ssn's and fbm's .  did 7 over 20 years    from 579 to 731

  9. I got an 89 Laredo Cherokee the other day for a parts car, for what it is worth. I am thinking over the winter rebuild that engine, have a transmission shop go thur the 5 sp and the transfer case to make sure it is in good shape. Review all the wiring systems and make any corrections that it may need. one for sure is the fuse box. One of my discussions is, What gear ratio I want in it. right now it has 3.07. I am toying with staying the same and just run 31" tires. I am not the rough 4 wheeler I was when I was younger. now mostly forest service roads and some fire trails. I may go with 3.53 but no higher. Unless I just fall into getting Dana 44's I will stay with what axles I have. Interior will need to be upgraded. paint will need to be upgraded, I think vynal camo from Mossyoak. a whole lot cheaper then a full paint job. also help hid imperfection in the sheetmetal. This what she looked like when I brought it home on the dolly. $500.
  10. Rode 7 differant boat, Fast and boombers 20 years retired , 13 years on board boat, figured 9 years underwater.
  11. I know that my tie rod needs replaced but I am going from 2wd to 4wd this fall. I want to make the change only once so that the front end will be set up right. no going back and making corrections. I am also going to do a 3" (?) lift on it so I can run 32" tires. I am going to put the ole girl down for the winter and start the work on her. I am trying to figure out the best way to make what changes to do. There is alot to take into consideration.
  12. I am going to need to replace some of the steering item on the front of the MJ. What are the upgrades that I can do to improve the front end performance from the steering box to the hubs. I have a dana 30 front axle. What can you recommend?
  13. So why did you remove the EGR valve?
  14. i would take it home for the parts alone. It can't be left in the field all alone. poor puppy
  15. i will have to look into that one. I got the old cluster to play with.
  16. I was out to salvage yard getting a "new" window regulator, and ran across a instrument cluster with a tach in it. for $20 I figured I would give it a try. It was sort of easy plug and play. the trick is to make sure the new one has the same electrical plugs as the old one. Here are the before and after... I gain 70K miles in one afternoon...LOL.
  17. Well I was going to just clean up the wheels on her to make her look a little bit better and my inner monster got the better of me and I strip the wheels. With brake cleaner, wire wheel and a can of black spray paint and a 1/2 day of fussing with it. Here is the before and after pictures of my ole girl. I also took the heat gun and peeled off the Pioneer decal and strips. they were kind of funky to. There will be more pictures to follow as future tasks are done.
  18. I purchased this Comanche a few weeks back for $500. towed it home on a dolly with the hood tied down. I figured I would save it and see how the repairs go. I looked her over good and she does not have any rust on her and only a few minor dents here and there. She does have the 4.0 with 207 K miles, and a 5sp tranny. Has 3.07 gears in the rear. But it is a 2wd (oh the shame), but that will be rectified. It did not have a dipstick and that was one of the things I wanted to find at the local salvage pick n pull.there was only about 1/2 gallon of water in the coolant system. and mismatched tires. It has not been registered since 2013. So far I did a major tune-up with a new radiator, hoses, and water pump. Cleaned out the inside completely and put in a rear view mirror. Repaired the brake system. replaced the trac bar and a tie-rod end, change the rear differential gear oil. replaced the window regulator. Replace the speed-o-meter cable and the emergency brake cable. All the fuses as well as the flasher relays. I ahve almost gone from stem to stern on her to make sure she is ready for just a daily driver. Plans for it; make it a 4wd as I find a Cherokee donor vehicle. I will do a 3" or 4" lift on it and add 31"or 32" tires. new bumpers. and do the body work. it is a toss of whether to paint her or just do a vinyl camo wrap from Mossy-oak. Put 3.54 gears in it and change the rear axle to Dana 44 and the front to a Dana 30hp. there are ideas running around to change the renix out and go with a newer electrical system but I am not sure if I am ready for that. I will upgrade the renix system for now. I am also thinking of putting on the 97+ doors to rid myself of the wing window. I may rebuild the engine. but that will be much latter. This is about all for now. I will keep you posted on what I find as I go along with the refurbishment of the Rascal. .
  19. how do you know if the proportional valve is working. my MJ has been seating for 5 years, I am finding that I that I am starting in the front and working to the back, going from the ground to the roof to check everything and I am getting to the proportional valve and was wondering how can I tell if it is doing what it is suppose to do or should I just leave it alone. has anyone had any dealings on this item? thank
  20. 1988 PIONEER, 2WD, 4.0, 5 SP, SHORT BED, PB,PS, and BLUE. She is still stock as far as I can tell. has a bench seat that has been re-upholstered. has a newer(?) rear bumper from smithybuilt with a tow hitch. She came home with me on a dolly and the hood was tied down. There is "NO Rust" on her anywhere but she has a few dents here and there. Maybe 207K on the odometer but the cable was broke so I don't know for sure. She was last registered in 2013, I got it 3 weeks ago and I have been tinkering on her since. I have replaced the old coolant system with an open pressure system and all the new parts from radiator to water pump, thermostat and housing, and hoses. A compete tune-up to include a new distributor. New fuses everywhere cause of corrosion. At this time she is running and has made contributions back to the family by making a dump run. She was bought to serve for utilitarian purposes to appease the wife. Plans for her, I am thinking of getting a donor Cherokee and transplant a 4wd into her. rebuild the engine with a few upgrades nothing exotic, do a short 3" lift and run 32" tires on her. change the gear ratios out to 3.54 and put a dana 44 in the rear. a solid bumper up front with an 8000lb winch. Slip in bucket seats and put in a headliner that she does not have now. put in a stereo that she does not have. and the list will continue from there. She will be residing in Western Washington for a while and being use for many purposes, fishing trips, hauling trash, going to the forest, hauling firewood, and just as a back up for the TJ for a while. Yes, I did bring home with a TJ.
  21. 3 week ago I Picked up an 88 Pioneer.  4.0, 5sp 2wd. 207K miles on her.  Paid a grand total of $500.  Brought it home on a dolly with the hood tied down. She has no rust in her and only a couple of dents.  Yes, I did tow it with my TJ.  It has not been registered since 2013,

So the first plans was to make it run to see what was.  I  bypassed the voltage reducer on the fuel pump and she started up.   I change the cooling system to an open system, new radiator, hoses, thermostat and housing, and water pump.

replaced all the fuses in the fuse box cause they were corroded, got the electrics flowing again to the jeep, checked the brakes, change all the oils and greased her up good, replaced a steering knuckle and the track bar.  change the key lock in the steering wheel and fixed the horn so it would work.   She runs now.

Future plans?  change it to 4wd,  short lift kit, 31"tires, 3.54 gears. upgrade the interior to bucket seats, maybe put a camp wrap on her.
