Thanks! My buddy's truck is a 1 ton Diesel Dodge so the truck is up to the job, his trailer is stowed @ my house, but only good to tow ~4k lbs, but renting, or borrowing a trailer is an option, I was mostly thinking of asking him to deliver for simplicity's sake & to save the truck/trailer favors for when I really need them. $100 was the ballpark I was in, leaning towards offering him $150 depending on how much trouble he has to go through for it. Edit saw the other posts after I hit send Thanks guys! So far everyone seems in the $100 range Good to know I'm in the right ballpark :)

I promise to post lots of details, info & pics afterward, just need to know if I'm in the right ballpark $$ to offer for delivery. Vehicle is under $1000, and its condition reflects that price. Thanks

I'm going to look at an older 6k lb truck. It's condition = absolutely couldn't make the trip driving it, and my buddy's trailer isn't big enough. The trip is 50-60 miles, lots of windy side roads, should take about an hour & a half. Seller said delivery is possible, so, Anyone have any idea what would be a fair price to deliver a 6k lb truck to me, 50-60 miles away?

XJ's were money makers. Highest demand Jeep ever (till the ZJs were introduced), in a high demand, high option, moderate price segment = high profits (Second highest Jeep profit margin only to the Grand Waggys). MJs were none of the above. The compact truck market was all about brand allegiance and price point. Jeep's Rugged reputation, and somewhat larger dimensions weren't enough to crack open the brand loyalty of the pickup truck market. Chevy guys still bought S10s, & Ford guys still bought Rangers when they needed compact trucks. So Jeep had to take a more expensive to produce compact truck, and fight it out with Chevy & Ford on price point to pick up the non brand aligned buyer. That meant a lot of 2wd base level, stripped MJs. Once the upmarket segment of pickups switched from regular cabs to extended cabs, the Comanche's days were numbered. Why make a few hundred dollars profit on an MJ when an XJ could take that same assembly line spot, sell quicker, and return 4-5x's the profit?

Congrats Rob! Enjoy the new pup :)

I'd like a pic of it in my garage with my license plates on it :P

Chryco 8.25 Typical Ratio
jpnjim replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The only reference I've ever seen to 3.73 geared XJ's was a note in the 93-94ish Brochures. This was during the time period that tow package 4.0L ZJ's used 3.73's. Only problem is I never found any reference to 3.73 geared 1993/4 XJ's anywhere else (even in the parts books). If they never made the parts, how could they get put in the Jeeps? (ZJ's used low pinion D30's that wouldn't fit XJ hp30's) I've always figured it was a misprint and doubted XJs got 3.73's in 93/4. Akula, the info below was pulled from every source I have, and none of them showed 3.73s in 96 or 99; ^^^If you do have a 199X's XJ with factory 3.73's, post up some pics and I'll change the chart. -
Thanks for telling the story Jim! I'm glad you both got 5 years with each other :) Did you name her Zip? because you got her for zip (free) or because she was fast?

My last suggestion would be to have a 4.0L XJ parts car close by when you're ready for this swap. There's dozens of small parts needed to get even a 4.0L into an 84-86 XJ/MJ Nevermind a CJ 258. In this instance, a parts car would pay for itself in fuel costs back and forth to the junk yard alone. Edit, I just saw you mentioned the trans mount. 904/999's were used off and on through the years on XJ/MJ's, so the mount itself should be an off the shelf item. 84-86 4cyl auto's used them if you need an example for the parts store guy.

They had gas stations back then Don? :D ;) I can't imagine how nose heavy an FC150 with a plow hanging off the front must be! Either way, it would make an awesome yard plow.

Sorry Jim :( With you as its owner/caretaker, I'm sure she had a very good life Rest in peace Zip.

^^^ kills me to post this, I would LOVE to pick one of these up as a dad/son project but time & money are in shorter than usual supply at the moment. :) Deal of a lifetime for someone :D

40k mile 30 year old engine? I'd at the least want to change some seals in that engine anyway. Rear main seal at the very least. The ft pulley drive system HAS to be swapped for an XJ set up. Serpentine belt, XJ ps pump, reverse rotation waterpump, XJ fan, idler pulleys, etc etc. Your Alternator should fit the Renix mount, so long as the wires reach. Hopefully none of the brackets interfere with the fuel pump mounting (4.0L's don't have mechanical fuel pumps) The best harmonic balancer you could use for it would be from YJ with a serpentine belt drive. YJ's came both ways. A spacer will move the serpentine pulley where it needs to be on that long nose crankshaft. No way will that CJ ft drive setup fit. There just isn't room firewall to radiator for that long engine + the old school drive set up. If you use 87-90 4.0L Renix style belt drive parts, they will all work with your carburated engine. ^that is if the intake/carb & air cleaner clears the hood. It probably won't. They completely repackaged that engine to fit XJ/MJs. If it doesn't, a low profile air filter might squeak you by, if not, start cutting the hood for clearance, or swap to one of the two 4.0L fuel injecton setups that do fit (I would go HO, head and all in this case) Speaking of hoods, You'll need a 4.0L hood, radiator support, radiator, hood release setup, etc, and have to chop some sheet metal behind the hood to fit it all. 85 4cyl/V6 & 87 4.0L are completely different. The old hood latch & radiator had to be moved to fit the 4.0L too. Some say the firewall is different 86-87 for the change to 4.0L but others have said it didn't really change much. The swap has been done, It's just not an easy one.

Dana 35's aren't rocket surgery ;) Pop the cover, if the oil looks metallic, that's your first bad sign. Check the teeth, teeth on the ring gear, spider gears, pinion gear. I had one lose like 3 ring gear teeth out of the blue. Clunk clunk clunk. Thought it was a u-joint at first, nope shiny oil and my 41 tooth ring gear was down to 38 tooth Another time I shattered the spiders, but there was no guessing needed for that. 35's just blow up for no reason sometimes. Good luck!

If you can't do this; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=464599 Lol This guy could probably make MJ tail lights in his sleep.

^this Is NOT irrational! It is 100% pure awesomeness :)

Lol Glad I could break the tension :) I would have posted what the last paragraph says, but I think its better in its original context. :D

I guess I wait till Christmas Day for a review ;) This ad is even better; http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/cto/3490421999.html DON'T FORGET TO READ THE LAST LINE IN THE AD!!! :D Lol lol lol

Yep That's irrational alright :D

That's what they looked like on the dealer's lots around here Rob! ;)

I think it makes me sound younger when I say I'm only 20 years older than my daily driver :)
-
Irrational, Like Deuce & a half axles on anything but a Deuce, tunnel ram on a street car, or daily driving an M715 :) Mine is, I want to build something with a Jeep Vigilante 327 engine; http://jubileejeeps.org/327/ AMC's first gen V8 'bigblock'. I don't know why I want one, I just REALLY do. Almost any build with one would work, I thought a stock 1960's FSJ would be perfect, Now I'm thinking what I REALLY want is a flatty Jeep pickup with a Vigilante swapped in. Points distributor, mechanical voltage regulator, and daily driven :D Tall skinny bias ply tires on 16" steel wheels & a granny 4 speed What do you think? Irrational? Anyone have an AMC 327 to donate to the cause :D & what is your irrational (automotive) desire?

We dumped all the teflon pans a while back. GF had to learn the 'Jimmy' cooking method; Stainless steel + lots of butter :) Tastes better that way anyhow (notice better sounds like butter, no coincidence there folks :) ) I saw those orgreenic pans trying to capitalize on the green thing, isn't ceramic an insulator?!
