Tilt wheel column-Cruise controll swap
PEEJ replied to PEEJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Looked last night,My Comanche has the ball type canister and my doner Cherokee has the blimp type canister. That part looks easy enough. Also gonna swap in the brake pedal from the auto and do away with the narrow pad pedal thats in it now. -
Guess I got lucky,Bought an 88 4.0 auto. 4x4 XJ for a donor to do a 4x4 swap for my 89 2wd. MJ 4.0 5spd.Well the XJ seems to have to have all the options.pwr. windows/ pwr. locks/ power hi back leather bucket seats / tilt column/ cruise controll/ rear window defrost and maybe a few more.Interior color even matches my MJ. I'm gonna swap in the tilt steering column .What I was wondering if its very difficult to hook up the cruise controll? Thanks

Trying to get all my ducks in a row before I start my swap and have a couple of questions for you guys thats allready done it.Looking at the XJ rearend it looks like the top spring pads have to be removed do to u-bolt interferance. Also unlike the MJ shock mounts,The XJ mounts are welder to the axle. Also when going from 5speed to auto trans. whats involved in removing the clutch pedal.(I know a torch or saw saw will do it but looking for a cleaner way)Haven't looked at this matter good yet,Thought I'd take the easy way out and ask first. Also has anyone swapped in the straight wider pad auto. brake pedal in place of the offset narrow pad 5sp. brake pedal? Also I saw a post somewhere on here where a member built a jig to set his new spring pads on his XJ axle and keep his pinion angle correct prior to welding.Could use some help finding this post. Thanks

First off I'd agree, They look pretty good.Second,I'm an old school mudder,Got my first truck in 1979,It was a brand new Jeep J-10 Golden Eagle.I soon added a 4" lift and 35"mudders,(biggest lift available, body lifts wasn't invented yet,38S were the tallest tires you could get) Since then I've had many 4x4s,81 Power ram 35s,A 78 Power Wagon with a 440 and 44s, 83 CJ7 with 401 police interceptor and 44s,83 F.S.Cherokee with 360 and 38s a 79 G.M.C. with 44S.and a few more milder 4x4,I guess what I'm getting at is it takes a lot more fender clearance than a lot of people think to run a large tire properly if your gonna wheel it.If it's just gonna be a hyway truck that's different. Good example is my 79 G.M.C. 16" Lift Bushwacker cut out fender flares, tons of fender clearance,First time out I ripped a front flare off.Another example the 83 CJ7 looked great but the 44s came off and 17.50/35" Mickey Thompsons took their place.Guess what I'm saying is on a Comanche if your gonna wheel it.5.5" Lift and 31s or 32s is just about right.(In my opinion)

Got my doner today,An 88 XJ 4.0 Auto. Select trac 4wd. Going in an 89 MJ 2wd. 4.0 5 sp. I'm assuming their a AW4 mated to a NP242.Acouple of questions,Are these good trans. and transfer case. Also theres a trans. switch on the dash that says POWER and COMFORT. Not sure about that either. Also the doner XJ has power windows/locks/tilt/cruise/ A/C/ power seats/and a few others things I'm not sure about,a thingy up between the viser clips and a switch on the front of the console Any idea what trim package it might of had?.Another ? I've read something about an extra cable going to the steering column,Is that an issue,Thanks

Saw an extreamly nice red Elimator Sunday evening near McEwen TN. Looked to be a complete restoration.(Looked like it would have looked like when it left the dealers for the first time.)Date was 9/7/14 Just wondering if it might have been a C.C.member?

I have a 89 2wd. Comanche 5 speed. 4.0. Can get a deal on 89 4wd. Cherokee 4.o auto. with bad motor, good trans. transfer case front and rear end.Other than shortening my rear driveshaft and matching my gear ratios,(will probably weld spring pads to bottom of Cherokee rear end)is there anything special I'll need.Everything else should be on the Cherokee I believe. Also, was wondering what works best(easiest) for the E brake,Using the M.J.cable and leaving the foot E. brake of using the X.J. cable and using the hand brake?

(Don't know if anyones tried this or not)Although the paint on my truck was in pretty good shape the Pioneer stripes were a little rough.A little masking tape some spray paint and a couple hours per side and I'm happy with the results. (Some how messed this up.The words and pics. were suppose to all be together and I've got the( after) pic. before the (before) pic.Not a computer guy.

Replaced torn shifter boot,Swapped old clogged fuel injectors with a set of Bosch 4 hole injectors(Man what a difference) Repainted my Pioneer stripes.(lightened up the colors a little, came out good)

Welcome,You've found the right forum.Bought my Comanche last oct. found this site and love it.So far every answer I 've looked for I found. If you use search for a problem you'll generally find the answer. If not once you ask,You'll get an answer. This is a great bunch of guys and gals on this site. And very knowledgeable.I agree with Minuit,I love the two tone,My Comanche is black but I was gonna paint it silver to match my L.J. then I decided to repaint it black,Now I'm having second thoughts,I really like your paint color.Where ya located? Also not a big fan of Haynes,I'm a Chiltons guy. -
I like it.Reminds me of the early Gladiator(Pre J-series F.S.) stepside beds.
