  1. Is the 86 carbureted? (can't remember) if it is, your curb idle could be a little strong.
  2. Really their are alot going into the top but none of the others have been tampered with during the engine swap. Okay I don't know but I think the red one is the supply, where does it attache? intake manifold? Okay so I have to have the vacuum source attached before the front driveshaft can turn at all correct? Well I hope it doesn't have a separate set of issues. When I applied vacuum to the blue hose it made the 4x4 light stay on all the time (and 4wheel was working when the lever was in 4wd((tested it on a slick hill))), even when the lever was in 2wd the 4x4 light stayed on. Now that the blue hose is not attached it no longer makes any noise and the light went off. Some one on another forum I searched said the blue hose was a purge and should not have vaccum on it at all. I don't know if they are correct.
  3. I have an 85 xj. Carbureted 2.5, torqueflight 904 tranny, np207 case. Brief history: an older lady I work with wanted it out of her yard. I went and got it. motor was stuck because it sat for 6 years with the head off due to a blown head gasket that was abandoned mid repair. I put another 2.5 out of another 85 xj in it. Had a vacuum diagram nightmare  , but I have everything working it seems except the 4x4 system. The culprits: There is a blue hose, and a red hose (assuming both are vacuum hoses) that goes under the jeep, I think they go to the top of the transfercase. I cannot tell what the red one does, when I "t'ed" the blue one into the hvac system 4wheel wanted to stay on all the time, which made the tcase makes scarey noises  when the tcase shift lever was in 2 wheel. So I am thinking if I can get the blue and red hose where they are supposed to go that would solve my issues. Thanks in advance: I would just start plugging stuff up in different ways, but the above mentioned situation with the scarey sounds makes me really not want to tear up the tcase.
  4. IMO if you are going to plan on doing a motor swap anyway, go ahead and put an engine in that is making the power you want. A 383 stroker chevy would give you more power than the truck could easily contain, and still be cheaper and arguably easier than a turbo 4.0 swap... (I wouldn't go 383, but I was just throwing out a pretty powerful power plant for examples sake.) I would go chevy small block... 327, or 350 if the 4.0 was not going to give the umpf I wanted. My two cents, good luck.
  5. You could sand blast 'em, but that's my answer to about everything.
  6. Technically not all explorers after 95 had disk breaks... The explorer sport trac has drums on its 8.8. Discovered this the other day...
  7. That sounds pretty greek to me, but I think I will just get one out of a 4.0 and see if I can figure it out. Then if not, just pester the crap out of you guys... :D until I get it working.
  8. Is it possible to calibrate the tach for use with the 2.5?
  9. I am beginning to give up hope on finding a full gauge cluster out of a 2.5 equipped xj. Every single 2.5 equipped xj or mj I have found has the idiot light gauges. Is it possible to make the full gauge cluster out of a 4.0 work in a 2.5 mj?
  10. So if someone was about to paint a vehicle outdoors with either a rattle can, or moderate spray gun: would anyone have any advice on this?
  11. This is under the assumption you are talking about an 86 MJ... crownautomotive has the parts I believe, you will have to check with a dealer. Most off road shops are crown dealers, walcks 4x4 (you have to call 'em there site is pretty uninformative) Quadratec used Crown also, but it isn't a part they are going to have in a catalog; gonna have to call. XJ brake pedals with the same engine/transmission configuration as your MJ would most likely work, I am sure someone will post shortly with that exact info.
  12. That's a pretty freakin' impressive rattle can paint job!!!
  13. I edited the post to inform folks that it isn't accurate.
  14. Thanks for all the clarifications, you would think you think a freakin' magazine entitled JP magazine would know jeeps... Well guess that isn't the case. This is my only defense of the article: The text said "until 2000" not through 2000, but that is only splitting hairs... So I guess disregard....I will delete it if I can.
  15. Um, some 4cyl wranglers had 4.10's but a whole bunch of 'em have 3.73's so be careful.
  16. EDITED:LATER FOUND THIS ARTICLE IS NOT ENTIRELY ACCURATE THANKS TO EAGLE'S KNOWLEDGE! http://www.jpmagazine.com/featuredvehic ... index.html I came across this in the June 2007 article of JP magazine and luckily is it on the jpmagazine site so I could link to it and not worry about copyrights :D , and think it could save a lot of questions and wear and tear on keyboards... The link really outlines the years and parts changes, a lot of helpful info for those of us that are swap hungry!
  17. I bet you don't have any of these left do you...
  18. Well, I wish you luck! I hope someone else can provide you with the exact info you are looking for... however the ax15 seems simpler, and I don't think you are going to tear a ax15 to shreds with a 2.5...
  19. I have no buzzer function at all not for lights or keys or anything... I will check up on my buzzer er....chime control module color or if I even have one...
  20. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=181361 This thread and many others if you search speak of putting the ax15 from a Dakota in a 2.5'd jeep. I am not sure about the transmission you mentioned.
  21. I think you have the AX5 tranny. You should be able to find a good used unit for minimal cost. If you and your buddies can't install it yourself, I would recommend taking it to an off road shop, around here anyway they seem to be a lot cheaper than your typical repair garage and should be very experienced with the AX5. (alot of times also, off road shops have used trannys laying around that they have swapped out of Jeeps. The AX5 is a pretty popular unit to swap out.
  22. I own a 1987 MJ with a 2.5 and the idiot light gauge cluster. I have no buzzer or anything to warn me that my lights are still on when I turn the truck off  . Did these trucks have a buzzer? If so where is it? My chilton manual tells me nothing about a buzzer. The Chilton manual does mention that fuse for the radio memory is the same fuse as the buzzer (it used a fancier term than buzzer that I can't recall) Well my radio memory works and all fuses are good. So I have to start looking for wiring (if it does have a buzzer.) Any help/advice?
  23. I have recently obtained ownership of a 87 mj with a 2.5. It had many many wiring "gremlins". I was putting off their repair (I fear electrical work), and finally one day I decided to fix just one problem, and leave the rest for another day. I fixed every problem it had in less than two hours, because every single problem it had was because of corrosion. I used a q-tip and some battery terminal cleaner and got everything working on it except the buzzer (which I am going to start a separate post about). You may have already checked for corrosion in your problem areas, but if not, go ahead check them you may be as pleasantly surprised as I was.
  24. Minor Update: I fixed the vacuum leak, and it really smoothed up the idle. I haven't had a chance to clean out the breather and hoses to see if the oil problem lessens, but things have changed for the better already.
  25. If you mean pretty good as far as reliable, then yes it is pretty good, probably a little better than pretty good. If you mean pretty good as far as powerful, then no. I have a 2wd with 2.5 and ax4 manual with 3.55 gears. Even with the absence of the weight of the dana30 up front and a transfer case, I wouldn't say the power is pretty good. I would say adequate. .410 gears would help. With a pre 87 you are a little stuck with the drivetrain swap. You can mate an ax15 to a 2.5 with some Dakota parts here. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=181361, this seems pretty involved so I would make really sure this is what you want to do. There are some online parts lists that can be found with some searching. Also, you could look into a non jeep drivetrain. Like a chevy 4.3, some guys on the forums have managed to pull this off very successfully, but I don't know the details.
