After market electric radiator fans and overheat issues?
Jerry replied to Jerry's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
OK! So I'm missing the electric fan, no wonder it was getting hot while sitting idling! I'll be needing to go down the wreckers yard then and find one. At least it means all the wiring should be there and I can just plug it in :clapping: Thanks for the info  -
After market electric radiator fans and overheat issues?

But it hasn't got an electric fan it's got a VISCOUS fan :???: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_clutch -
I need a shunt in the right direction please guys My new Pioneer('89 4.0L Auto) has the idiot light instead of a proper water temp gauge and it comes on if I'm sitting idling for five minutes on a hot day. Is that normal? It did it while I was in line up for emissions testing the other day so I got the guy to switch on the fans they use to blow air into the radiator and within about 20 seconds the light went out again. Does the idiot light come on well before the motor is really overheating or is engine damage occurring by the time it comes on? I thought I'd get an after market electric fan for it and if the light comes on BEFORE a true overheat then I'd rig the fan to switch from the light. It's got brand new Rad and viscous fan BTW Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks

If anyone figures out what this problem is it'd be great to hear what it was. Mine was working fine, then all of a sudden it started to read low and won't go above 1/4 tank however full it is. I've checked the sender and its wiring and resistance and all is good there but the voltage at the connector by the tank is only 6v meaning (I think) the problem is further up the line. It did go all of a sudden which might point to a loose connector somewhere. At some point I'm going to pull the gauge cluster and see if there's anything obvious there

I'll do that! Thanks for the offer  Pics on the way when it's on the road. Needs aircare before I can drive it :( Can anyone tell me where the wiring associated with the auto gear changing is? I gave it a serious jet wash on Sunday including under the hood ( :dunce: ) and on the way home it took a couple of miles and an overheat for it to dry out enough to start changing upgear again! It did fix itself though so it wasn't too distressing an experience

its from arron prichets(don't quote me on spellling) song big boy toys its like my favourite song at the moment lol I'll look that up  That is, after I go for a spin in my new toy :clapping:

Got it last night and I've only driven it a couple of miles so far, my better half had the pleasure of driving it home! Going to take it for a good spin today and then I'll know what the 4.0L really feels like. I got her outdoors to pin the throttle while I was following in the blue one and I couldn't keep up! Even though the blue one is a manual gearbox. It's got the original radio so that will hopefully mean no-one has messed with anything important. So being a Pioneer does just mean it's got a fancy stripe! :D edit: Hey FreakJeep, what are those lyrics from? - "i like big boy toys, motors and lights , knobs and switches and 4 wheel drive", I've got that song but I've no idea what it is.

Shawn! Dude! Look what you made me go an do! :fs1:  '89 Pioneer. Is there anything special about a 'Pioneer' package guys? Or does that just mean it's got a fancy stripe down the side? It's all mostly good, 93k miles, refurbished suspension throughout including an add-a-leaf package, BF Goodriche AT tyres, topper and bed liner. The bad - Minor dings here and there, LH rear wheel arch rusted out at the top edge and the floor pans need some attention (don't know how much yet). edit: and the rear bumper has got holes in it too.

. . . . . . . . if you consider buying a newer truck and discover you can't because only a Commanchee can fill a coomunche's boots  . . . . . . . . if as you walk away from it you can't help looking over your shoulder at it

Cool, so that's adds another job for me at the weekend along with pulling the dash, installing new plugs and dizzy. Gotta find a good shop for ariels and stuff now

I've got a pair old amateur CB radios in the cupboard I thought I might chuck in my vehicles but no one seems to sell gear for them I anywhere! Are they technically obsolete now? That seems to be what people say when I mention CB's. What do truckers use these days? Mine are about 20 yrs old, but they still work fine.

Thanks Pete, I'll look into a 97-99 and see what's around. I want to find something with a minimum 7ft bed and regular cab because of the weight distribution. The camper is over 1000lbs and that weight HAS to be carried as far forward and low as possible. It fits the MJ just perfect with a few inches on the tailgate. :clapping: Sounds like a good plan  Can I assume that if it's an '89er it'll have the 4.0L? Shame it's an auto. I'm not sure how I'd get on in the rough stuff with an auto. I've never tried it though! Any thoughts on wheeling with an auto by comparison to a manual?

Thanks for all the feedback guys  The options are limited eh! I have been eyeing the Dakotas as looking about the right size for me but they all seem to have 6ft beds. Can anyone verify that? If I could find one of those with 7ft bed it would work. What are they like off road in comparison to an MJ? I think a Ranger is out, the box is too short, and narrow as well I think. A Toyota would be good, I like their reliability record (not counting the recent issue!! ) especially if it's a diesel. For less money than a newer truck though, as Eagle said I can probably get a GREAT(!) Comanche and spend the rest of more road trips. It's starting to look like a no brainer :D

Please give me your 2c! I'm thinking about a newer truck so I can give my MJ some TLC and time off. As some of you may know I'm not from round these parts originally so my knowledge of US/CAN trucks is limited to what I've learned in the while I've been here. Seems I'm getting to know a lot about MJ's though  Anyways, I'd appreciate some input if ya don't mind. The deal is my MJ does everything I need of a truck and I don't know what the options are for a newer truck that could do the same duties. I've been looking around but all the other 'less than ten year' old mid size trucks I've seen just don't match the Comanche's abilities. Why did they stop making them! Here's the list of essentials I'm looking for based on my experience with the '86 V6 gem in the pic over there: Driven every day so fuel economy is important. A full size would be OTT for me. Good power - yes, excessive power not necessary. Very capable off road with just the addition of good wheels and tyres. Again, a full size truck won't do it 'cos they can't squeeze down the knarly trails we like to head for, they're just too big. Can haul stuff, big stuff, like an 8ft camper! So short boxes are not an option, must be at least a 7ft box. Good history for reliability. Easy to work on. At the moment I'm thinking my best option is to look for a really good clean low mile original long box 4.0L MJ :D Whadd'ya reckon guys? Is another MJ the best way to go? Thanks in anticipation :wavey:

Out West in BC - rain rain rain rain rain rain rain rain rain surely the sky must be empty by now!! :D

Why do you want the add a leaves? If you're after more load lugging ability (as opposed to extra lift) air springs are a good way to go

Which states/countries have you visited in your MJ?
Jerry replied to beepbeepmyredjeep's topic in The Pub
British Columbia, Washington, Oregon All camper carrying entertainment, 500 mile round trip the longest distance -
"Real camping" IMO is getting to those out the way places down knarly trails and having a good fire and cook-up (edit: and LOTS of ice cold beer from my fridge). What you sleep in/under don't matter as long as you're out there doing it. I'm not sure just how much sleep I'd have gotten on this rocky river bank last weekend if I was tenting though! ;)

Anyone had this and figured out what it was?.......................... Gauge works fine: If I disconnect the sender unit the gauge reads full tank (max resistance). Sender units works fine: When disconnected from the loom it shows around zero ohms when resting (empty tank) and 100ohms when lifted to simulate full tank. But, as soon as I connect the sender unit back into the loom it will not show more than 30ohms when I lift it up. Could this be indicative of a chafed cable mildly earthing out somewhere and therefore reducing the resistance?? any ideas? Could it be the gauge doing funny things? The gauge WAS working fine then one day it just headed south like I turned off the ignition! It came back for two seconds then dropped again and stayed like that ever since. Are there any common areas in the loom on Comanches where the sender cables run that chafe and earth out? Am I even thinking along the right lines!? Appreciate any ideas, thanks guys
