My buddy's fiancee is just barely over 5 feet and after he lifted the XJ, which he bought for her to use as a winter car, as well as the occasional off road playing for him. Well, after he *finally* replaces the water pump he will probably be driving it with her driving the 4wd Dakota, as she now has to jump to get into the XJ.

I have run 275/75R15 on my truck since I got it last February and think 3.55 gears with the 4.0/AW4 is a good ratio for those. Those tires measure 29", which is about what 30" tires measure. Most tires measure about an inch smaller than their size for some reason. 3.73 might be better, but 4.10 would be too much. And there's not a big enough difference between 3.55 and 3.73 (about 5%) to warrant the cost of regearing 2 axles.

New pump is on, sounds good, 30 minute test drive works good! Let's hope it lasts....

Both the U bolts that my buddy had made for his XJ and the ones I had made for my MJ (local shop custom makes U bolts cheaper than I can buy them) were 9/16.

I filled up with 89 octane for $1.54 about 10 miles east of Toledo this morning, but only because they were out of 87. Here in Canada it is $0.699 per liter.

A 6 hour trip took 9 1/2 hours. Some breaks to let the fuel pump cool off, which worked for an other hour in the morning, but only 10 minutes toward the end. Limped into my parents' drive way about 10 mph wanting to stall out. Fuel pump *was* extremely loud at the start of the day, toward the end it was a lot quieter, and sometimes you couldn't hear it at all for a second or so, immediately followed by the engine stumbling :eek: oh, and there's 4 feet of snow on the back deck of the house. After I install the new pump I will try to climb some hills in the parking lots, but don't expect much without lockers.

I'm signing off for now as the laptop has to do mapping duties and the wifi has to be packed up to go to Canada with me (to be hooked up to my parents' dsl router). And in about 30 minutes I'll start on my 350 mile journey with a bad fuel pump. Leaving at 2 should get me through Detroit before rush hour traffic starts. Hopefully I'll still be able to go fast enough by then to stay on the freeway (I75 to I275 to I94). If not, I guess I'll take Gratiot Ave through the city and towards Port Huron. Plan on picking up another pump in Port Huron on the way through (last Advance on the way, hope to hit them as they open), cross the border and then another 80 or so miles to my parents' before I change the pump in their garage.

XJ /MJ realy dim lights and low volts

On mine if I have the heater fan full blast together with the headlight on after a few minutes the volt meter is almost in the red and the lights ate noticeably dim. As soon as I touch the gas (and the rpm come up *just* a bit) the volt meter goes up, the headlights brighten and the fan runs faster. I guess we are pulling more amps than the alternator can supply at 12V while idling. I also noticed when it is cold out (and by cold I mean cold, as in single digits Fahrenheit, not 50 degrees like they call cold in FL) at any rpm faster than idle the voltmeter is almost touching red on the upper end of the scale. I guess that's the cold messing with the voltage regulator. -
3.55 definitely. No question about it.

Without looking under my hood, but going by your description it would be the purge line from your charcoal cannister. That cannister traps gasoline vapors from your fuel tank. When the engine is running they get sucked in and used up.

Installed a dud fuel pump. Will have to do it again I guess.

Original pump lasted 21 years and 126,000 miles. Replacement pump lasted 7 months and 11,000 miles. New replacement is a dud and so loud I can hear it from 50 feet away. It does -for the time being- allow me to do 75 on the highway, just can't put the pedal to the floor as it starts to buck and surge around 55-60 and can't make it to the shift point at 65. Let off the gas a bit to allow the transmission to upshift and it's okay. But being this loud I expect it to get worse over time and I have a 350 mile drive ahead of me day after tomorrow. Oh, and it's an 87. No ballast resistor. Relay is good, fuse is good, (see through) filter is clean. Regulator not tested, but truck was running perfectly fine when the pump was quiet.

Old pump could barely keep me going 45 uphill on the freeway before I found time to swap the new pump in. Right of the get-go it is as loud as the old one, and not pumping enough fuel to keep up with wot redline. :mad: Must have been a dud. Can't get another replacement until after I leave for Canada. I guess I'll pick one up somewhere on the way and hopefully make it to my destination to change it as I really don't want to to it out in the cold in a rest area.

Considering I'm headed to Canada early Boxing day, I don't have much choice but hope for the best. There is no way the current fuel pump is going to make it. Or keep up with Detroit traffic for that matter. But as much as I've messed with the fuel tank and related components, it's no big deal any more. I've come to the conclusion that owning a 21 year old Jeep means fixing something at least weekly, and at least this is a quick fix.

Well, I get to take the fuel pump assembly out again. My pump bought in June is going bad already. Just got back from Advance to buy a new one. Tomorrow it's going in, then the old pump goes back to the store for a full refund. I'm going to switch my old sending unit over to the new assembly also, as it works better with the longer arm. The tank should be about half empty, but the gauge still reads full because of the short arm on the sending unit.

Current is measured in Amperes, or "A", potential is measures in Volts or "V". If you have a 25V potential across the starter, either you are running a dual battery set up connected in series, or you are reading your tester wrong.

Yesterday (Monday) morning when I went to work it was 0 degrees, going home at 3:30 it was 12. Then at 6 I walked to the local pub for the company Christmas party in 11 degree weather and walking home afterwards it was down to 6 again. That cold I think in the future I will drive, even if that means I can't drink. Low 40s would be T-shirt and shorts.

If nobody has come up with an answer by tonight I will try to remember to see if I have a diagram in my repair manual.
