tj front flares on a xj or mj
GirsMJ86 replied to 1bdmj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
it can be done and there are a few on here who have done it. i quite frankly don't like the look of them but was thinking of useing the rear TJ flares both front and back on mine if it would work. Alex -
ok i did my CAD fix today and took pics along the way. so here they are in order. located the CAD on the passengers side of the front axle. took the cover off and disconnected everything from the cover. slid the sleeve over to the left to "engage" 4wd. cover right after coming off. lost some oil but not a lot. cover/fork side shot. top of cover after being cleaned. notice where the fork is, that's where it is when it is not in 4wd and first came off. the c-clip down in there on the rod against the fork needs to be pulled off to allow the fork to be worked over to the side it is in now as seen in the next pic. worked the fork over after taking the c-clip off. this side it will hold the sleeve in the 4wd position. just work the fork over (it is sort of hard but trust me it will go) then reapply the c-clip to hold it there. didnt get any more pics but all you have to do now is bolt the cover back up and reattach everything to the cover. but leave the vac lines off. i just zip tied mine up for now til i get to the store and get some caps. i then put the truck up on four jack stands and tested it. i shot a video. here is the link to it. it is 5MBs so dial up beware. all it shows is the side of the truck with the tires spinning. ok i started to do my CAD fix on my 91 yesterday but ran into a snag. i found that this was not connected because the wires had caught on something and broke. and to me it appears to be the switch to tell the 4wd light to come on. what do the rest of you think? i need a new one if anyone has one or can get ahold of one from a JY. none of the MJs in the JYs around me have these. also when i do this CAD fix do i have to put the cover back on upside down or will it stay? should i use something to hold it over maybe? and i should disconnect the vac lines from the shift motor too shouldnt i? Alex

i would say just the truck. not sur ehow they do the screening process though so not sure. Alex

I THINK I FOUND A FSM ON DISK
GirsMJ86 replied to JOMJ87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
back when i worked at the jeep dealer in town they had some manuals left over that they were getting rid of. saved the MJ ones though (nice thing about workin at a dealer). anyways, i got ones that were 86, 87, and 88. i now also have the 91 manuals since Rob gave me those with my 91. the 86 and 87 are AMC everything. the 88 looks for the most part just like the 86 and 87 only it has Chryslers markings on it with AMCs info. it is for the most part an AMC manual just like the 86 and 87 but has Chyslers marks on it like logos and copyright info. and everyone here should know that the 91s are totally different because it has the info for the stuff that Chysler added to these things. and like what Eagle said about buyin his 88 XJ new saying that it is still an AMC; my 88 MJ on the title and ins and stuff said it was an American Motor Corp pickup just like my 86. but my 91 says it is a Jeep pickup. I THINK I FOUND A FSM ON DISK
GirsMJ86 replied to JOMJ87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
i was startin to wonder if anyone was going to say that. Alex -
well i just saw that the tigers were put to sleep by the cardinals. not a big baseball fan but I'm not big on those birdies. maybe next time  . Alex

how thick of steel did ya use? how long were the peices that you used? that is almost perfect length for what i am looking to do and i have tons of scrap metal to use to make em then reinforce them with a tube inbetween so they would be bullet proof. thanks. Alex
-
jeepthing - could you get me a side shot of those? i can't find any con-ferr ones on ebay anymore but i have some connections and maybe he could hook me up with some just like em or maybe fab some up for me. thanks. Alex

thanks alot for all the replies. i will look into the shackles, really didnt want to do SOA since it requires some work and is too much lift for what i need. Alex
-
ok my 91 already has a 3" lift on it and i don't have the money to go spend on a kit. all i am looking for is just maybe 2 more inches front and rear. i have coil spacers for the front but was wondering what the best way would be to add to the back. if i took and threw in one more leaf from an MJ pack would that get me enough lift? or is there some other way that would be better? Alex
-
ok i can't find those lens on motorwings. maybe i am not looking hard enough though. Alex
-
your pic from the front is also not dead centered. it is centered on the 88 and not in the middle of the two. but yes it does look wider in the tire area. and that 86 sure has gotten around now. its makin its way west. i got it from NJ and brought it to OH. now its in WI. where will it go next? lol. Alex
-
hmmm thats odd. i just had this same thing happen to me. but i knew right away what i was going to do. get my hands on some por-15 silver. the silver works the best over rust. and you don't need to grind the rust before doing por-15. it stickes best to rough and rusty metal. good luck. Alex

i will take a look at the maxxis tires. where did you get that quote from? Charles - i did not put the liner on but i don't think this is rhino liner anyways. it appears to be the cheapy kind that you buy in spray cans. if you look close you can see that it is coming off in bid chunks in places. i am going to get off what i can then use true rhino liner in the future when i rip out my carpet and rhino line the floor. Joe - i sure am glad you didnt stash that thing. the lights are not wired and won't be for awhile but it fits nice. the only thing is that this truck never had one in it so i had to drill the holes. and the front is not bolted in at all because if i drilled the one behind the drivers side i would have gone through the tank. so the front will either never be bolted down or i will take the bed off to do it. Alex

i also found a place that sells them but don't remember the site. another good one lost when my laptop fried. if you search for the clear coner lens thread i started the site is in there. they were cheaper then what joe got them at too IIRC. Alex
-
my 91 has the rustys 3"lift and they ride really well. i will say i was sort of worried because of all the bed stuff i have heard about rustys. they flex well too from my little fork truck tests i have done  . Alex

small update: still have not done the CAD fix since i have ran into other problems. i got the windsheild replaced. i got a better tailgate on it. and on its first trip threw our feild i about blew out a tire. i found an old fence post and it took a nice chunk out of the sidewall. i didnt notice til the next morning. it took all the rubber off but just a thin enough layer to hold the air in but with a nice size bubble. then when i went to take the tire off our floor jack we borrowed wouldnt work. we ended up useing bottle jack. but one of the lugs stripped since they were on so tight and we had to mess with it for a few hours to get it off so i didnt have to trash a canyon rim. now it has 3 good canyons with BFGs on them and one wagon with a almost slick GY. so things have sort of been delayed project wise til i get the money together for a full set of 31" tires that will do good in mud but not wear too fast on the road. anyone got any good tires they don't want anything for or at least know of any good ones i should get? Alex

HEY!! I KNOW THAT 86!! lol. hope its going well for ya. just be careful thinking that way on that rear main. i thought it was getting better there for awhile a few times, but it does that once in awhile. then all of a sudden, woosh you have no oil! so just keep on top of it til u get it fixed. speakin of which. i just remember you needed the info on how to do that. ill see if i can find it or you can just ask on here. jeff knew how to do it and i am sure some others do too. Alex PS - did ya ever get ur clear corner markers for that yet?

hardly tech.... replacement interior lights?
GirsMJ86 replied to BrettM's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Mine didn't have them either, BUT they where wired from the factory. I added some form an XJ and they plugged right in and worked fine!!! NICE ADDITION!!! CW they are a nice addition to these things. the two pillar lights just don't make enought light but its weird how if you put in the 2 kick lights how much brighter the cab is. Alex -
eh it happens. i have done that many times thinking something in one of my rebuilds needed fixed and turns out i just break it and the fix was something easy. i am in the process of painting and refinishing the tailgate. thanks again for that. Alex

nice paint job by the way Cole. looks sort of like what i was going to do to my 86. but i was going to put all my own stencils on to match how the old MBs were. if ya want to see an example of it just search for my topic called "paint job ideas" IIRC. that is also if i still have the pic hosted anymore. Alex
