What would YOU do with a 31k mile 89 MJ? (build?restore?)
dunl replied to jpnjim's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I forget...was it a "badged" Pioneer? I see nothing wrong with installing needed "stealth" ugrades like the booster that aren't obvious, and then original "Comanche" options. Nothing non-Comanche. -
More $$$ sent your way, in appreciation of what I have gained from the site.

Sounds like you're getting lots done.

vbulletin is great if you know how to use it properly, but this board is great for "self-employed" guys like Pete. I hate sounding like a broken record here, but using the Internet since it became public, I have seen what sponsorship does to boards. There are typically two scenarios: 1) most common....the board needs money, decides to raise it by sponsorship, and then loses control because it is afraid (or can't) lose that cash flow. Board dies out because it is no longer the same board, or it can't support itself any more...or both. 2) maybe something like .5% fit here.....the board is run as a full business, and is so successful that sponsors NEED the board, and can be made to jump through hoops to ft the board, or they get dropped. I was a veteran mod on a board for another hobby one time. The board was much like this, catering to the general masses. Lots of group buys, saving others lots of money for the members. Then the sponsors arrived, and when a forum member not associated with a business in any way set up a group buy for a $199 item as opposed to the same item the sponsors were selling for $279, they shut it down and had it removed in order to keep from looking bad. The board took the side of the sponsors, instead of the members. I took issue with it, and when I was told we couldn't afford to lose the sponsorships - I left. In no way, shape or form was I going to be associated with something that was completely against the principles on which the board was founded. Worst part was the guy who ran it seemed to be a great guy like our fearless leader here. I think he just backed him into a corner he couldn't buy himself out of. :dunno:

Going to look at a 30k mile MJ tomorrow..... Any advice?

Nice....pics man, pics. :) -
I think you created something for like-minded people. :) The nice thing would be that you don't need it to be a required thing...I bet we'd be willing to fund things ourselves if you posted a paypal account for us to donate to. As for a club truck...I was thinking of that myself today, too. :)

Thanks for the explanation for those of us who haven't used or fabbed them. I can understand that totally. I used to have an 80 Mercedes 300SD turbodiesel sedan. The sound of the heavy, well-made German door closing on it compared to a car of today was....well.....almost erotic. There's something to be said for solid construction. However, back to my original question...isn't the idea of the unibody so that it can flex?

Cool idea. But kind of a fatal one for us Canucks this time of year. Your pictures look like mid-September. :D

Going to look at a 30k mile MJ tomorrow..... Any advice?

I agree with all above...the only real question is why not? Find the tiniest spots of rust, and ask if the guy does his own bodywork. Whether the answer is yes or no - converse on the aspects of hidden rust that cannot be seen but MUST be taken care of in order for it to become something besides "just another 20yr old truck". The more work you can come up with that needs done to keep it in a good condition, the lower you can value it. Case in point: WWII jeeps are almost IMPOSSIBLE to find up here. Yet, there is a 1943 15 minutes from me for $800.....still there, cause of the work needed. It simply becomes just another jeep project. Good luck.....we want to see at least 50 pics tomorrow. -
Good points. I don't think it would take a lot to keep it going, especially for more than one person. :agree:
-
Sure. Tell me why.
-
Yup. I still don't quite understand how angle steel will resist bending or twisting more than tube. :dunce:
-
Same thing I thought....helluva a lot of BIG plug welds.

No....you live south, halfway down to Florida. -
I can't really see where angle instead of tubing is going to resist bending anymore than the current frame rails. Unless I am missing something here?
-
Anyone ever use them? Not that I'd pay $150 for them either....but isn't the idea of having a unibody the same as the older willys jeeps....it's meant to be flexible?
-
http://calgary.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicle ... Z176433063 I've never seen anyone sell anything like this before.

Maybe I missed where this was done before? Well...no worries about doing it twice, I guess.

I was going to ask Pete about this, but as he is already funding the website out of his own pocket, I know that his answer would probably be something along the lines of "thanks for the nice gesture, but really...it's fine, etc." So I figured I would do a poll. Each of us understands sometimes how hard it is to come up with a certain amount of money for a necessary repair sometimes. On another forum, they needed to upgrade and asked for donations through Paypal....it was a small site, something smaller than this one, but lots of people pitched in. $5, $10, $20, $40.....they raised everything they needed in about 6 hours. Same thing happened here in Alberta on a forum where one prominent member asked for donations for a trail repair.....$1400 in one day. I bet if Pete would allow us, in a short time period we would be able to raise donate some cash to help with the running costs of the site. It doesn't have to be much....$5 from 20 members gets $100. The point is....it only costs us a very little amount, but helps Pete and the forum a LOT. I'd pitch in some cash....would you?

Might explain the quick response times.

I'd like to see On-Star do this with a MJ. As for moving, not everyone wishes to live in a city like Colorado Springs. I haven't wired a switch in yet, but I agree they are becoming more and more common. I'm thinking now instead of a fuel pump, that I'd like to wire it to the ignition switch at the bottom of the steering column. Turns over, but won't start. That's how I bought it for $800 in the first place. :brows:
