overall length difference, 231 vs 242
StevenH replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It looks like they are both sitting on the studs on the transmission mounting flange. If all the studs are the same length that should give a fairly accurate measurement. -
I opened up the mailbox last week and theres a piece of cardboard taped together. What is this? Is it a prank from somebody I know? Could it be the anthrax virus from a terrorist and going by the name "Pete". I shook it around and didn't hear anything. I listen to it, it's not making a sound :D open it up and I look..... ..... ..... ..... :D ..... MY COMANCHE CLUB STICKERS AND MAGNETS!!!!! Thanks for the stickers Pete! They look good. I will give the ones I don't use to other Comanche guys and direct them here!

How do i find out the gearing on my axle?
StevenH replied to Whiteshark's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
We want to know what ratio ya got :D -
I accidently jumped a railroad track running about 60mph and I must have hit it just right because the landing was perfectly flat and smooth. When I was in the air it felt like time had stopped and I was in slow motion, the only thing I could think was "when I land my tires are going to blow off of the rims!!" I was passing another truck across the tracks and I swear I was higher than the bed of his truck :D this was in a chevy 1500 2wd No vid so it must not have happened

I am doing a leaf spring conversion and plan on using the lower control arm frame bracket. I tried an XJ leaf and the center pin location seems to be a good bit off, a CJ7 front leaf looks like it would be a perfect match but I want a longer spring than the CJ spring. Any ideas? I plan on front shackles and they will mount to the bumper which will be directly in front of the factory crossmember. Maybe I should ditch the idea of using the LCA bracket and make a new bracket for the spring?

How do i find out the gearing on my axle?
StevenH replied to Whiteshark's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There may be a metal tag bolted onto the back of the housing with the cover and Dana axles usually have a number stamper on one of the axle tubes. Most people can't find that number but it's there, check the tube on the right side it's more than likely there. The metal tag has the ratio the axle assembly had from the factory, it is wrote as 355 for 3.55 and so on... -
I was browsing advanceadapters.com and they might have an adapter for a 4.3 to your transmission. If you have a torqueflite it will be able to hold up. The downside is the adapter will cost around $500 but if you already have the engine and everything to go with it, that actually isn't that expensive. Have you decided on what you are doing? What engine and fuel system? My opinion is don't run the 60* V6 if you want anything that resembles performance. I obviously don't know anything about the 3.4 but if it's like the 2.8 it's junk. A 3.4 is definately your easiest swap if that is what you are after. You would not have to get driveshafts made or fab anything up, it would be basically a bolt-on mod. Another suggestion is just get the engine in there and run a carb and come back and do FI as another project. Or you could swap the entire drivetrain instead of buying the 4.3 adapter. For $500 you could buy a used transmission and transfercase. You have a lot of options on this actually...

I didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn last night but I bet if you wanted to put TBI on a 3.4 you could do it ;) What exactly are you doing? edit: I scanned back over the whole thread and don't even know where I got that you were doing TBI from :D Didn't 2.8's have TBI at some point? You could probably use that if TBI is the way you are going. Also, the van that the 4.3 is/was in has a TBI harness at your disposal if you have it.
-
I thought you were still doing the 4.3 but yeah, it will be same on the 3.4 as far as I know. Google it some more and you probably find some good explanations of how TBI works.

Sign up at v8s10.org and ask questions if you need to. I go by the name chevy350 there S10Wildside on that forum makes custom harnesses if you are interested, or ask in the wanted section and buy a used harness from someone

Look around at some f-body sites, browse at www.v8s10.org also. TBI is simple as heck as long as you know a little bit about it. It's pretty much a stand-alone system, it's a lot simpler than the Renix FI on my MJ.
-
I must be lost, but are you getting the entire frontend of a truck just for a TBI harness? TBI is not that complicated, you can easily get the harness out.

I just wanted to chime in and say I am doing a 4.3 swap in mine as soon as advance adapters gets my parts here. I am doing a 4.3/th400/d300, I have a 9" underneath it now and a passengers drop d44 will be here one day this week. Mine will be carb though, that's a big difference from your swap but I have messed with TBI a little bit and might can help some. Browse around at www.v8s10.org

Rewiring underhood from FI to a carb engine

It's too late, the other 2 harnesses are already cut out  I won't need the starter relay, it's already out. I am using a gear drive sbc starter, you hook the hot wire up and run a wire to the solenoid. I won't need a harness either, all I will have wires going to is the coil, starter and the gauge sensors which I will use aftermarket gauges and use their sensors. And the headlight harness but I know it is coming from the firewall conector. The windshield wipers are on it's own harness that comes out by the master cylinder. This will be a rock toy and not a DD. I cut the wires that come out of the firewall towards the passengers side because it all looked like FI. Chevy runs their FI injection harness out of the same exact spot. Then I got to the harness that comes out of the middle of the firewall and it was FI also because the wires that go to the injectors are in that harness... made me wonder if all of the wires were going to the FI from the first harness :D It doesn't matter either way, I can wire it up no matter what. I just wanted an idea of what was in those harnesses to give me a headstart. If Chiltons had the diagrams of the wiring harness in their manual I would have known this fromthe start ;) -
The splines on the clutch disc have to match those on the input shaft on the transmission. The stock clutch might work, just find out how many splines each one has. Try the one that the transmssion was originally in

89 MJ 4.0... I am putting a 4.3 under the hood, while I'm waiting on advance adapters to get my motor mounts here I am sorting through the underhood wires. I basically have the wires cleaned out, my thinking is the only wires I will need are the ones from the firewall connector, I am assuming that the other 2 points that wires come into the firewall are all FI and emissions related... was I wrong to make that assumption?
-
That firewall connector diagram was exactly what I need  I am going to start a seperate thread on my wiring :D
-
Right now I am having issues with my Chiltons manual. I need the firewall wiring diagram for my MJ, where the wires go to the fuseblock, and the Chiltons book doesn't have it. Not because of this, but I like Haynes a little better I think, they seem to be more specific than Chiltons. I remember the old Chiltons manuals, to replace something the instructions would almost be "Unbolt part, bolt part back on" instead of being specific about anything you had to do in the process. I actually like to keep them both handy for cases just like this, if one manual doesn't have information I need I just flip to the other one.

I found some pictures taken at Beasley Knob today, this is about as bad as it gets there. There is one ledge that you might not be able to go up but you can go down it with no problem. It's a beautiful area. Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found[/img]

Nah, you can make it. Every trail at Tellico isn't that bad. If you take a 30 minute trip down to Blairsville and go to Beasley Knob you won't have many rocks there, it's mostly just an easy drive in the woods. Well, it was the last time I was there anyways :D
