  1. just an update on the leaks. since swapping out the vents the leaks have totally stopped.i would have never thought in a million years that so much water could pour in through those moveable vent assemblies! live and learn.
  2. the first thing i did to my 88 5 speed was rip out the 3.07's and put 3.55's in. even with the small stock 205-75-15's 5th gear was useless.gas mileage actually went up with road trip mpg at 22 or better.(4x2 all stock).
  3. the guy that just bought my mj is thinking about switching it from 4x2 to 4x4.my truck was '88,4.0.5 speed, long box, bench seat.he wants to find a donor truck for the parts needed.he also wants to convert it to an aw4 automatic at the same time.obviously, the best choice for a donor would be the exact year 4.0,4x4,auto,long box.the next would of course be the same w/short box.if we can't find an mj donor, how much stuff is different from an xj(besides rear driveshaft length of course)?will the xj shifter console fit the mj w/ bench seat?any help would be much appreciated.thanks.
  4. no i did not trade the mj. i sold it to an older gentleman that wanted a small truck to tow his fishing boat.he's a real nice guy and after i saw his shop and his "toys" i know the jeep got a good home. bought a 2008 quad cab 4x2 with "toys".sticker was 32k and i paid 20 thou + tax and fees.the 4.7 now has 310 horses.look out all you corvettes.i will be on the prowl!!(not).
  5. i needed something bigger to tow with so my mj is sold.my local dodge dealer in johnson city tn. is giving 40% off on all 2008 ram trucks.according to the salesman i talked to there is no fine print.40 off sticker plus tax.all incentives are folded in to this so no 2.99 gas deal or anything else.but still,a nice 4x2 quad cab with most of the toys and a v-8 after discount runs about 17-20 thou. + tax.
  6. here's a link to my 64 deluxe corvair van. "http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd250/thumper477/jonesboro195.jpg"
  7. thank god i am old enough that when i was growing up in the 50's and 60's it was still ok to beat your kids when they deserved it.it sure kept me out of trouble as the thought of dealing with my parents if i got caught was a great deterrent to getting in trouble.
  8. the otc tool is indestructable.worth every penny.i have been able to score a few of these tools at auto swap meets over the years.they go pretty cheap and always work fine no matter how beat up they look.i resell them on ebay and make a few bucks doing it.
  9. my '88 2wd 4.0 5 speed was totally useless with the 3.07's.and i run the stock size 205-75-15 tires which are a lot shorter than 31's. i can only imagine how bad it would be with a 4x4 with 31's and 3.07's climbing hills or towing. i swapped in a 3.55 and truck is much better.i think a 3.73 would be perfect for my truck with the stock tires.bigger rubber needs bigger gears-4.11 or 4.56 to have any performance or towing ability especially if you have a manual trans.it's real easy to smoke a clutch in short time if your truck is undergeared/overtired and you try to start off on a hill towing a trailer.
  10. since i bought my 88 4.0 mj last summer,i have never been happy with how it ran.previous owner bolted on all new tune up parts(plugs, wires, coil, cps, cap, rotor, fuel pump, cam sensor, etc.) i checked for vacuum leaks, tested egr for defects, updated pcv, tested sensors with snapon scanner.i pretty much figured that bolting in some fresh injectors would be my next attempt at curing the rough idle and general lack of "oomph" that this truck was experiencing. i have heard of others having good results with the injectors from ebay so i decided to give them a try.all i can say is holy crap batman!what a difference.like night and day.smooth idle now, starts quicker, much improved torque and pulling power up hills(mj is 5 speed,3.55 rear).i can lug it at 1200 rpm in 4th gear and just mat the gas pedal and it will accelerate very nicely with no chugging.money well spent imho.here's a link to the ebay site:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=270224492353&rd=1
  11. your oil pump pressure releif valve was probably stuck causing very high(150-200 psi) oil pressure.this is what blew up your filter and oil sender.could have been some debris had gotten the valve jamming it.it may never happen again or it could happen tomorrow.the valve is part of the oil pump.its probably best to pull the pan(again!) and install a new oil pump.
  12. swapped out the vent windows today.installed my jy remote mirrors.got ambitious(why not, high 70's,sunny,slight south breeze)and yanked off the drivers door and replaced the worn hinge pins and adjusted it to close properly. supposed to rain tomorrow.we will see if yanking out the moveable vents cures all the leaks or just slows them down! old non remote mirrors for sale.10 bucks for the pair and they are in nice shape.shipping extra.they should fit in a usps flat rate box which is about 9.00. i take paypal.
  13. put a tee in your oil pressure port so you can hook up 2 sensors.the extra sensor should be a single terminal oil switch that is grounded with 0 oil pressure (will provide a negative signal to the cel bulb) and open when engine builds oil pressure after it starts which will turn off cel.find the wire from the computer that controls the cel,cut it and splice in your new wire from the sensor to the bulb.tape up now unused computer wire.done.
  14. we should do a sticky that would help people find the real meaning of for sale ads.here's my contribution.when the seller says"needs a tune up",that means it has 3 burnt exhaust valves."needs radiator flushed-runs hot" means head gasket is blown/or cracked head."ran when i parked it" means has'nt run in 10 years, motor stuck."needs new brake pads",yup, and calipers, rotors, hoses, lines, master cylinder, rear drums, shoes, cylinders, but the brake pedal itself is probably still ok."needs transmission adjusted" means either auto trans leaks fluid faster than you can put it in or trans is smoked."tires ok" means if you fill them up they will be good enough to tow car home."uses a little oil" means you need to add 2 qts. of oil per every 10 gallons of gas used."leaks a little oil" means the oil pan is rusted out or the rear main is smoked."needs 20 dollar part to fix it" yeah and 800 dollars labor at the repair garage."interior needs cleaning"-owners dog lived in car for 2 years."check engine light on-needs new sensor",actually, probably needs new cat converter and 4 new o2 sensors-1500 dollars."original paint-no rust".....ha ha ha ha ha ha ,right.
  15. that title is ruined now.if you live in an a@@hole state(most states are in regards to titles),you are screwed.this exact thing happened to me with a title for a 99 chev van i bought in NH on ebay.i was'nt too familiar with their titles,(i lived in ny at the time) and did'nt notice that the title was signed improperly.long story short.after trying to jump through all the bulls@@t hoops at dmv's in NY and NH.i gave up and hired a title service out of maine that somehow weaseled me a AZ title.took months and 650 dollars to get it done.moral of story.unless you are buying something for parts,MAKE SURE the title is PERFECT.ONCE THE SELLER HAS YOUR MONEY,HE WILL NEVER LIFT A FINGER TO HELP YOU WITH A TITLE PROBLEM.with most states,it's all about sales tax collected on casual used car sales between individuals.they want you to title a vehicle as soon as you buy it even if you don't put plates on it. they want that sales tax money from the sale.when cars transfer from person to person with out the PO titling it,they lose out on the tax.
  16. the rpm meter(tach) needs a primary ignition source to "wiggle the needle" while cranking the engine. back when honda cars had a lot of ignition module failures,i used the "watch the tach while cranking" method to determine this.if the tach did'nt wiggle,i replaced the module(primary ign.).if the tach wiggled when i cranked and i had no spark,i replaced the coil-cap-rotor(secondary ign.)the manche needs a cps signal to wake up the primary ign.look at that first.the module will just lay there dead without it.check all wiring connections and grounds.jeep wiring was'nt great when new and is'nt any better after 20+ years.
  17. i think the scamp was the plymouth name for the rampage.scamps are much less common.
  18. american cars get smaller with smaller engines, while japanese cars have gotten bigger with bigger engines. thats why gas milegae is crap. if honda still made comuter cars like pre 92 they would be getting easily 50mpg. my friend had a 90 crx hf with aftermarket ac installed. he got 48mpg highway with the ac on. i would get 37 city in my old 90 hatchback. yes,the older jap stuff did get better gas mileage.but since 1990 i am sure that crash survival on small cars has increased tremendously.all that safety stuff and more stiff structural construction makes cars heavier.heavier cars need more power to have equal performance.more power=less gas mileage.my d/d is a suzuki sx4 which strains to get 30 highway mpg.i like the safety of its heavier construction and the 6 airbags.i don't mind using more gas if it means i might walk away from a wreck rather than riding in an ambulance.i drove tow trucks in the 80's and 90's and i can remember some pretty twisted up jap cars where the occupants did'nt fare too well.
  19. lee iacocca should come over to your house and beat you severely for selling that fine mopar.always has been one of my all time favorites.one of my buddies took a rolled one of them and made a shelby scamp.one hot little truck in its day.
  20. i would be interested in all the parts needed to do the swap.can you put together a price for a "package deal" shipped to 37659?pm me with the info, thanks.
  21. a manche with 4 headlights would be hot!
  22. go to fleabay and type in item #330005980927
  23. i bought my cap on craigslist.the seller said it was on a late 80's s-10 long box.it measured out ok compared to the jeep box.it did have an angled front where it goes up against the back of the cab.it ended up fitting very nicely.looks like it was made for the jeep.who knows, before it was on the s-10 it might have been on a jeep first.seller had no history of it. the cap came with the s-10 when he bought it.
  24. i guess then it is safe to say that you have never owned a dodge intrepid late 90's with the famous 2.7 l. v-6. i have yet to see one of these last more than about 50-60 thou without big problems.
  25. back around 1994 i had an xj.it had a dealer installed accessory cupholder that clipped to the passenger side of the center console.it worked good.are they still available now?
