  1. Thanks for the actions to perform, Dave. I will try to do some of that this weekend. (after I install the foglights. hehe.) I am really particular about how to jack and support a car. I had to pull a transmission once. I just didn't like the idea of wiggling a transmission out with the front suspension on stands. That's not enough contact area for parts that change angles under load! I made two blocks out of overlapping 2x4s that the front tires sat on, then I had those beefy jackstands under the rear axle. ;)
  2. Glad to make someone laugh. :D The woooowooooowhirrrr doesn't change tone very much if I let off the gas. The sound continues. Do you think a pinion seal sound would come and go with load similar to a whiny set of gears? I've had experience with noisy gears in three different vehicles. They all were speed AND load dependent. And total PITAs. :fs1: EDIT: Wait a minute. I just realized your username. I think the noise sounds a little like it, too!
  3. Now that I have safe tires on my MJ again, I've been driving it to work this week. There is a sound I had forgotten about, and I think it's more noticeable now that the carpet and padding it out. Everything is louder now... It sounds like it's coming from the rear half of the truck, but I am not sure. I seem to hear it the most from ~24-45 MPH. It's a wooooo-wooooo whirrrrr sound. It is vehicle speed dependent, not engine RPM dependent. The truck has 73K miles on it, and it is a 4x4. It drives straight, and I see no sign of it ever being wrecked. My first suspicion are wheel bearing in the rearend. But I've never had a 4x4, so I don't know if it's noise from the transfer case/etc. What areas should I focus on? It's made this sound with multiple sets of tires. Any pointers would be appreciated!
  4. Same exact filter as the Mobil One filters.... Usually I see the purolator filters a buck or two cheaper than the M-1 filters. Speaking of which... I was going to get one of those if I didn't find another WIX. Autozone listed the 207 filter for $7.49 and the superduper K&N that has the nut was $14 I think. At O'Reilly's and Advance, the top of the line K&N with the nut was the same approximate $14-15, and the lesser filter was only a dollar less. :hmm: Anyway, check the prices on the regular M1 filters. Some stores have them jacked!
  5. Thanks for the fuel pump warning and ground advice! I only have one red wire at that connector, and it's thick. I moved the connector around, and I can see that it does deadend there. I just need a set of lights, a little bit of wiring, and a relay!
  6. I think you just fixed me up! 1. I didn't think about the green/black tracer being a deadend since it's just for foglights, and 2. I assumed that red wire powered more than than just foglights. In the photo I linked, are the two orange and black striped wires running to that white "block" on the inner fender a ground path for something? If so, I imagine there is no reason I can't use it for grounding, too?
  7. I took a look under the cover and saw where there were a few of them that all looked alike. At least two looked identical to the wiring diagrams I've seen with the 85, 86, 87 numbering. Is such a relay like this a behind the counter part, or something the auto parts places have on the floor with the rest of DIY electrical supplies? I cooked in the sun at the salvage yard yesterday. I never thought about getting part of a harness. :( I think I'll add wires before going back for a harness. :dunno: Most of the XJs I saw were hit in the front, too. I assume this is the 10-pin connector I need to work with: I know the fat red is the #30 relay power source and the green/black striped wire is the #86. If I am adding the wiring necessary to hook up the relay, what is the most proper way to do that? Splice into those two wires and feed them to the relay, or is there a better way? Are there connectors that will snap inline with that 10-pin connector and let me select which wires to piggyback? What do you recommend for the #85 ground path? Create one to the inner fender? Thanks for the advice.
  8. Those that have added foglights to MJs that never had them, are you getting a factory replacement relay or a universal type? EDIT: I am referring to installations that use some/most of factory wiring.
  9. I am in Memphis. My bench is almost in perfect shape. I will likely just hang onto it until a good set of buckets can be found or other model's fabbed in.
  10. That's a thought, but it looked too "jagged" to have been forced, IMO.
  11. I'll check them out next time around!
  12. I changed the oil in my Comanche today. When I first bought it, I got a NAPA Gold. Remembering the NAPA Gold series is a WIX filter, I looked for WIX closer to home than the nearest NAPA. O'Reilly's #1 had the WIX #51626 for the '87 4.0L. Off I went. They only had one. When I was about to install it, and I was putting the oil on the gasket, I realized the last ring of the threads going into the filter had metal shards sticking out. Uh oh. Thankfully my next closest O'Reilly's had one in stock, and they swapped with me. As good as WIX is, that discovery was rather disappointing. The second one didn't have any metal showing, but the last part of the threads were not as smooth as the old NAPA Gold I took out. The two I handled today may have come from the same batch. :hmm: Normally I take any filter out of the box and look it over thoroughly. Since this one was a behind-the-counter model and the only one the store had, I didn't look it over. I love it when a simple oil change seems to take all day...
  13. The first day I drove mine to work, my boss practically ran to my cube, and starting going on and on about it. I didn't think he'd never seen one, but I never dreamed he would remember them so vividly and know so much about them. It's nice to work around people that dig cars and other cool vehicles. 8)
  14. The pot on my donor tach did not turn very freely, but to be safe I put a little paint on it. Had I not had paint readily available, I'd skipped it.
  15. Do they even know what a Comanche is? :rotf:
  16. The inner ones are for your fog lights, the outer ones are for the brush guard as Eagle stated. Thanks!
  17. Thanks for the advice everyone. After doing some research and realizing my Jeep Rewards VISA points were soon to go away (see thread in The Pub), I got a set of BFG Long Trail T/A Tours through my Jeep dealer. I got 235/75-15s. The "Tour" version of the tire is geared more towards the wussy CUVs/SUVs that have watered down our macho, manly 4x4 segment. And since I am not very likely to go offroading, well, they were just what I needed. :rotf: The Tours have "excellent" wet traction per BFG (rated higher than the non-Tour tires), so they're just what I wanted for a truck with no weight in the back. I can't get over how well they ride vs the worn out, 10yr old Michelin LTX M/S's I had on there. The VISA rewards points paid for the tires! As flaky as my job has been all year, that's the best part!
  18. Anyone else here have a Jeep Rewards VISA card? In case you haven't read every last piece of paper in your bill, the program is ending. The last date to redeem points into "Dealer Dollar" certificates is Aug-31. The last date to use the certificates is Oct-30.
  19. When I pulled my carpet and padding a few weeks ago, I had some of the interior panels apart, so I carefully pulled the lights out. They have never worked, but they look to be in good condition. I will be cleaning them up soon. I am glad to know there's a LED replacement!
  20. Your Chief is awesome!!!
  21. I never dreamed the foglights had such a history. LOL The foglights on my '88 Trans Am are metal, and rusty. I can relate to the ROL joke. Do you guys know which set of holes is the "correct" ones to mount? I may try to clean up my junkers tomorrow. Then again, the junkers may just barely fit into my Trans Am's nose, and if so, they may be a permanent solution to my rusty ones. Then off to Walmart for those "OEM" Blazers. LOL I've seen the other threads on wiring a set. Awesome resources are on this forum!
  22. That is very interesting! What year models did the Marchals cover? I assume they were used on MJ and XJs of the same years?
  23. I was at Walmart the other night, and I saw a foglight kit by Blazer for $16 or $18 bucks. It was advertised on the packaging as "Original Equipment." I am curious if anyone else has used them and how close are they to OEM appearance? I had no idea they were that cheap, or I wouldn't have paid $10 for the set I pulled off an XJ in a junkyard... They both look very similar to each other, and of course the junkers need a lot of TLC to look good. Also, I gotta ask... There are two sets of holes on my bumper where foglights can be mounted. Which set is the "correct" factory set of mounting holes? They are so close together I am not sure which to use. I am not one of those that wants to restore a car to "concours" condition with correct date codes printed on the spark plug wires, but I do tend to go for the correct OEM look. ;)
  24. It was rather relieved when I got the padding and carpet out. I've got enough mess to fix elsewhere for this to have turned into something huge. :( Thank you for the help! I had no idea plastic clips were under there. I may try to use a paint scraper with a similar shape, then stop if I am not comfortable with it. Thanks for the urethane recommendation.
