  1. Sorry if it seemed like I was asumming, I wasn't. For some reason... I destroy wheel bearings, and I don't know why. BTW cool pics.... where are the ones of the MJ on the trail  Patrick
  2. UP unitl I seen that item on ebay, the cheapest I could find them was 100 bucks a piece. I have been through 3 sets of wheel bearings in a yr. I always torque the axle nut. :( I was running 33's with 4"BS, now I am running 35's with 31/2. As fo driving sanely offroad... How do you do that? I go out there to test my vehicles limits, not ride on the access roads. I also want to know how to perform maintenance on these unit bearings :? Keep in mind I wheel my rig on a somewhat regular basis :D most months I go at least once, some times twice :-D , and I don't take the easy lines
  3. If you plan on keeping your D30, I strongly suggest getting the hub conversion from warn, or mile marker. You will come out moneyt ahead. Especially if you wheel your rig, or have larger tires. Most places wil not honor their parts warranty after one replacement. Patrick
  4. A Jeep of any kind never dies  It lives through ppl picking useful(junk) parts off of them and being transplanted on other Jeeps. Kinda like organ donors  Patrick
  5. He might have made a mistake, and thought you were talking about the J10 trucks. I have heard of places selling the bearings and parts to rebuild the unit bearing hubs, but I can't find anywhere that sells the individual parts. Patrick
  6. I guess I might try replacing all my brake pads.. it really can't hurt. Patrick
  7. MY alcans were 390 plus shipping. man these things are flexy, and smooth riding. Patrick
  8. Around where I live.. There are several places to fill propane tanks, be it what ever size yoiu have. Also Propane powered forklifts are just about everywhere in the j-yards, so some parts can be found on the cheap. Patrick
  9. Well, all I know is I need to do something. I was weven thinking of doing a line lock or something similar  All I know is My brakes are in "good" condition, and then don't hold me on a steep incline cvery well. Patrick
  10. I always thought brakes were one of those fancy options you pay extra for  I have been having severe brake fade, especially when I am going up a steep inlcine, and need to hold the brakes, and give gas at the same time, Or when I have to back down something to get a better line. I am thinking that I am going to be "fixing" my brake system before long.
  11. BDS has a great rep.. and they honor their warranty as long as you have a reciept. I have only dealt with Rusty's a few times, here are my personal impressions. Shipping is slow, customer service is fair. AS for their parts... Their front coils are average, ride a lil stiff. Their tie-rod conversion is a piece of crap, and not worth te money. Ordering centering pins from them, and then recieveing the wrong side was frustrating, especially when they wanted me to pay for shipping them back. Needless to say.. they won't get any money from me.. ever again. Patrick
  12. Just swap in some disc brkaes.. then you don't have to worry about adjusting them. Patrick
  13. pingpong

    Ooops.

What motor is it? And is it front wheel drive or rear? Patrick
  14. Nice pics.. I feel really bad that I missed this ride now... Just looks like a lot of mud though  I am going on another ride on the 12&13 of November to a place called Crozet... I can't wait. Most of the clubs built rigs are going, and it promises to be interesting. Patrick
  15. I forgot you have a 4 banger, and a manual :? Sorry about your lack of power man. I fit 31's before I had any lift. Might need to massage the wheel well lips, but that is all. 33's and 35's take a bit more work, but the recipe is simple. 6.5 coils up front, SOA, and custom leafs in the back. A fair amount of fender cutting.. and 35's fit. Auctually all I have to do is add some more bumpstopping, and I am golden. They fit with no issue at all. I do plan on extending my wheel base a lil, since I added the bigger meats. You have to love the adjustble Long arms :D Patrick
  16. 4.56's and 31's :? Thats not a lot of tire for those gears. I know there are a million different theories on what gears, with what tires, But I am now rolling on 35's :D with 4.10's, but I also have an automatic  Gas mileage... Yeah right... ease of driving oh He77 yeah :D . I was running 33's with this set-up, and it did well, then I came across a deal on my 35's so I had to step up.. if I don't like the way they roll, I will back back down to 33's. I have found that wheeling a LWB vehicle you need larger tires, and a fair amount of lift to go places. The lack of breakover, approach, and departure angle hurts. Also it doesnt take that big of a rock to make it feel wierd. Patrick
  17. Lets see... 4 banger, 4wd, and a jeep :? What would I do :?: I think dropping in a Np435, the right t-case input shaft, some serious metal butchering, and maybe a roll cage for kicks, some larger tires... and it is on. We have a guy in the club running the same setup on his YJ, and the thing is Bad @$$. Goes where he wants it.. as long as he satys off the truly stupid lines. Crawl ratio of 75 to 1  He has so much torque that he literally broke the block engine mount in half  Yeah the cast aluminum piece on the engine ( made for a real long day, and a interesting story) If you want a track beast find a s-10 or ranger and drop a small bvlock in it. Patrick
  18. Everything the said above is very true. I have found a way to minimize it, and keep my heap running w/o a total rebuild. I used a 85 CJ7 PVC valve, and grommet. Needless to say remove crappy stock parts and install these into the valve cover. Then where the stock unit connects to the intake, remove that fitting and replace it with a brass air chuck. It will screw right in. The connect the 2 using your favorite type of hose, zip ties or hose clamps. It will not stop the blow by, but it wil help a lil. Total cost under 15 bucks.. You w ill save that much in oil if you drive your rig a lot  :D
  19. Back before I went and bought a trailer and tow rig.. I would drive my rig to and from the trail. That changed after we did Tellico this past spring, and I bent both front and rear axle tubes, destroyed my front locker, power steering pump, and Alternator. The road miles were 1137 for the trip, I don't know how to figure the trail miles.. But I used a tank of gas in 2 days. Patrick
  20. On any of the Long arm kits out there expect to have to do lots of mods to make them work. Just a heads up. Patrick
  21. Well I was just curios to see how extremely equipped some the garages are equipped among MJ owners. Personally I have 2 welders, oxy/acytelene torches, horizontal band saw, 1hp dril press, 2 cherry pickers, 20 ton press, parts washer, bench grinder, 30 gallon air compressor. as well as a complete compliment of specialty tools (slide hammer, ball joint press) As well as the most important thing cooling equipment. 3 box fans, and one 36" round dual speed fan. Lets not forget lack of storage space.. and spare parts in the rafters. Patrick
  22. You all have fun and be safe.. also take plenty of pics... I hope to make this run in the future sometime. Patrick
  23. Thats a nice writeup... Covers the basics for doing the job. My only problem is he only discussesGMAW (mig) welding and not SMAW(stick) which is my prefered method, but it is all relative in principle, and practice. Like he said prep work is king.. when in doubt grind it out. If it looks like poo poo...then the weld is probrably poo poo. Also a good grinder is needed when learning to weld. Patrick
  24. There are several factors that are going to determine your D/S length. I have a SYE and lots of rear wheel flex, so I had mine built with 3" more slip spline, this also helped when I swapped out my D35 for an 8.8 (is 11/4" longer). So not knowing what t-case arrangement you have, and wether or not you rig is swb or LWB, sounds like yours is SWB though it is hard to say. Best thing to do is to measxure for your D/S fully flexed in both directions, and make a compromise. Patrick
  25. I think it would be a good Idea to have a fab shop section. where ppl can discuss, and share what they have made, and how it worked/didnt work. Personally I have done lots of fab work on my rig, and as time and money allow I will continue to do so, and I would be happy to share my ideas, and designs with anyone. Patrick
