Front end wobble above 40 mph
pingpong replied to red_eyed_rider's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It could be so menay things it is unbelievable. First I would re-check all my u-joints, and regrease them. Then I would check my steering stabilizer. Personally I don't run one, I think they are over rated. Then If you still have that vibe after all that, I would check tire balancing. Some places don't balance the tires right. More then likely though it is a u-joint somewhere. Patrick -
To me they just look like some spring perches, with plate added to make spring plates, and some beefy grade 8 bolts. Doesn't seem like it would be to hard to make if you have a decently equipped garage. These are just my observations. Patrick

It sounds like there is air in your system. Run it hard for ten minutes then open the bottle, and keep doing this. If you have no temp change after 5 or 6 times then your sensor might have been funky(have trash on it before coolant drain), and now with clean fluid it is reading" correct" Patrick

I have a Rigid Co bumper, and a winch on the front of mine, and I still got 7" of lift out of 6.5" coils, and that is after a yr of serious abuse. Patrick
-
The 7.5 coils will probrably be closer to 9" when first installed. So you are goping to have to get creative when you put this lift together. Chevy drop shackles from a full size should net you close to 2". Then there is a bastard pack which might gain you another 2" depending on how bad your leaf pack is.

here is a video of me going through an obstacle called body shop, the second day after the lincoln locker was installed I made the hardewr line http://www.zippyvideos.com/597962500224 ... body_shop/

The lca mounts are triangulated, and go up into the fire wall area, and there is more material (metal) on the inside. The cab is connected tto the "frame" in 2 spots beforeit goes to the bed. Then the frame rail gets taller, and a touch wider, on top of that there is the huge "x" under the bed stiffening it up. Patrick

We ran red and black trails, while the saner ppl ran blues. Patrick

35's on the setup you have is very doable, cause I am running them on just about the same setup :D I went to alloy shafts, cause I got tired of replcaing them. I disagree with what some one posted about not locking the front. Always lock it up, posi's and lsd's are limited traction when you need it. I ended up lincoln locking my rear at Crozet this past weekend, cause I got tired of getting denied on Obstacles. I agree with Pete, if you break your build down into smaller things, it gets satisfying. Long term builds get frustrating, especially when the wifey starts nagging about how much you have spent. BTW my setup, keeps up with rigs with far better setups then I got. I was one of the smaller rigs running the blacks and the reds at Crozet, and I had a blast, but did not hold up the group, and I did not break anything that would keep me from going down the road. anyone here run SOA and 31's?
pingpong replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Their are advantages and disadvantages to doing a SOA. To run 31's is it would look extremely funny. you should be able to clear 31's in the rear stock. Patrick -
I have a set of 2" lift soa alcans in the rear, and they flex great, and ride even better. Pricey yes, but worth their weight in Gold

Lots of pics were taken... my rig somewhat survived  damage on my rig consist of a really bent center link, dented tranny pan, danted and bent, and cracked exhaust, some more body damge. The group I was in had lots of breakage. CJ8- t-case out put shaft CJ7 boken d44 superior axle, and Detriot locker soa YJ, dented in cowl section ( 2 seperate flops) Cj5 on 42 Cracked tranny case, bent front leafs, cracked body Samuri in our group, rollover, front axleshaft rear axle shaft All in all it was awesome. I recommend going there, but if you don't want body damage, run low blues, if you don't care run high blues and blacks, if you are locked front and rear, and have a cage run reds  BTW I wasnt locked when I went there in the rear, but I am now, after we lincoln locked my rear on day 2

Well, I am getting ready to roll out here shortly. It promises to be a great trip. Weather is going to be in the 60's during the day, and the 40's at night. I will post pics when I get back. There will be everything from xj's to CJ5's on 42's   , there might even be some relativelyu stock rides as well. Patrick
-
Also keep in mind.. XJ lift shackles under 1" of gained lift won't do you any good on a MJ. I have found that full size Chevy lowering shackles work nicely for lift shackle though. Mine measure 93/4" eye to eye.
-
I don't think so. I tink the only options for the MJ were trim levels and the 2 engines. Also there was a Metric ton package, but I have yet to see one to measure one. Patrick
-
You don't need a big honking motor to turn big tires, you just need low end torque and gears. Look how many comp buggies are running 4 bangers and 6 poppers  Personally I just moved up to 35's, and I plan on going to 37's when money and I build my other axles. Patrick
-
I just measured a set of MJ springs I have behind the shed, and they measurre 52 1/2.
-
If I was going to do a total build on a MJ, it would start with a 4.3v-6 or similar size motor, go to a Modified turbo 350, with a np203, with a 205 doubler. For axles I would go with the tried and true d60 and 14 bolt, geared to 5.13. For body tube bed and full exo cage, with an internal cage for protection. Expect a project like this to take yrs, and cause at least one threatened divorce, and one near bankruptcy. Patrick

I went an ordered a set Of Alcan Springs. They are custome made. This means not cheap. They were 390 before shipping, and they were worth every Penny. IF you ever even think that you will go higher, don't waste your money keeping your rig SUA. Patrick
-
Do you want the measurement straight across eye to eye, or do you want the measurement following the leaf springs? I know XJ leafs are 5" shorter, I also know that Full size chevy leafs will fit :D , just the centering pin is in the wrong spot. Patrick

There is a wheeling trip to Crozet this up coming week end. I know I am posting it up here late, here is a link to it. There are only about 10 pre paid spots left http://forums.xjsrule.com/viewtopic.php?t=95 This place was featured in I think it was Petersons a few months back. It is suppose to be some insane wheeling Patrick
-
That price you were quoted sounds a lil high. I just got my tow rig done, over the rails long bed for 500. It doesnt hurt to shop around. Patrick
-
The plans for my rig as it stands now is full cage and tube bed after next weeks trip, then Full widths. I just acquired a HP44, and a HP9", plus a divorced 205. Thinking of doing some kinda doubler  Right now I am running Alcan custom leaves, and I have no noticeable axle wrap... but this is also with a well used 4.0 Patrick
