comancheman
my brother is picking up a 1987 cherokee/wagoneer with the crazy looking front end. it has a d44 in the rear and i believe an np 242. hes buying this just to drive for a few months until his yj is back on the road. so a couple questions: will the d44 be the same with as the d35 under his yj? will it boltup without any mods besides new perches?i hope not cuz then i get it for the comanche. :brows: also the tcase shifter reads 4hi, 4hi lock, N, 2hi, 4low lock, 4low. i crawled under to look at the tag on the tcase but couldnt make out the model. I'm assuming its a 242 and the shift indicator just read different in 87? I'm used to the 4 fulltime, 4 part time, indicator on the later 242's. also right before the slip yoke on the end of the tcase there is an electrical connector, any ideas antidisestablishmentarianism that is? and finally, wats the vote on bolting that front end onto the comanche. ive seen it on here before i think, I'm still tosing the idea around, gimme your opinions. thanks, TIM
Motion Offroad
It's a NP242. Another easy way to tell on the Renix era XJ/MJ is to look at the front axle. If it has the vac. disco it's a NP231 TC, if it does not have the vac. disco it's a NP242. In other words the vac. disco axle was only used with the NP231. As for the D44 all that would be required to put in his YJ would be new perches.

Eagle
The description of the shifter choices does NOT sound like the 242. Are you certain it's an '87? Is there just a shift lever for the transfer case, or is there also a knob or botton on the console and/or a horizontal sliding lever that moves across the vehicle, widthwise? Is there a "Power/Comforst" switch on the dashboard, in the toggle switch block to the right of the steering column?
HOrnbrod
I've always liked the Waggy front end on MJs. Lot's of chrome. :D Here's a couple more pics Marcus (Gojeep) sent of one of his mate's Aussie MJ. Image Not Found Image Not Found
comancheman
it has the power comfort switch and antidisestablishmentarianism looks like an aw-4 underneath

Is there a "Power/Comforst" switch on the dashboard, in the toggle switch block to the right of the steering column? The 87 that I pulled my 242 from had not your standard full time part time on it. Freaked me out at first because I pulled it before I saw the shift plate and thought I had pulled a 231. Tag has 242 plus if you shift it through the positions you have an extra one compared to the 231. Far as putting the XJ axle in the YJ, the YJ axles are shorter than the XJ/MJ ones by a little bit. I think around a inch in a half or so. Someone correct me. I know the YJ is shorter because that is what is in my MJ right now and the wheels don't stick out as far as the fronts do. If you can convince him the YJ will look funny with the rear tires sticking out more than the front, you could end up with the D44. :brows:
Pete M
YJ axles are identical to XJ axles except for the mounts. MJ bodies are wider in the back than the front, so all of our front tires stick out more than the rears. (even worse in mine since the 9" is 1" narrower than the front Dana 44)
Jeepinmanch
How much wiring change is needed to swap to the wagoneer grill and lights?

In fact I think someone on here told me that. Oh well live and learn.
