Eagle Posted February 28, 2008 Share Posted February 28, 2008 What year Jeep and what tranny? You have to be VERY careful what you use in the Jeep 5-speeds. The AX-15s (and probably also the AX-5s, although I have never seen anyone write about them) do NOT like any gear oil that has sulpher in it. The recommended factory stuff is only rated GL-3, because the higher ratings have more sulpher. The sulpher attacks the bronze in the synchronizers, and pretty soon you don't have synchronizers. If this stuff is the same as the fairly new (3+ years?) Pennzoil Synchromesh gear lube, I called Pennzoil when it first came out and asked them if it's good for Jeep trannies. They said it is formulated for the NVG3550 and 4500 trannies, and that it should NOT be used in the AX-15 or the BA 10/5. However, they declined to tell me just why, or to tell me what the formulation is. If I remember correctly, it carries no GL- rating whatsoever. Ford makes some MTF thats calld "Honey" that some people have used, not on Jeeps, though. I guess I could try it in my 89's BA-10, but only until I find an ax-15 to swap if it explodes. I'm wondering why Honda's benefit so much from the GM stuff, and Jeeps don't... I know theres no listing to what the Honda uses as materials, I though it may shed some light on why Jeeps don't like the lube, but Honda guys swear by it... I know theres no listing to what the Honda uses as materials, I though it may shed some light on why Jeeps don't like the lube, but Honda guys swear by it... the only thing it has to do with is the brass syncros its not the design of the trany its all gears and bearings. my friends running syncromesh in his AX15 only been running it about a year syncros haven't gone out yet. the Toyota equivalent to the AX5/15 uses motor oil (I'm going to run it in my ax5 if i ever get around to rebuilding it) my friend ran ATF in his never seemed to hurt it. i would try my luck with motor oil though its cheap and the yotas run it Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Engines, trannys, t-cases, axles, lawn mowers, trimmer,generator, chain saw, etc, etc... If you go to a jeep dealership 10W30 motor oil is what they'll put into your AX transmissions. The AX fluid was superceded by 10W30 motor oil. jtdesigns Posted May 23, 2008 Author Share Posted May 23, 2008 what did you decide to run in your ba10? well had to change the fluid in my rodeo and it uses dextron 3,, when I was at the dealer to pick it up the parts guy took my wallet and smacked me in the face.. :eek: gm stuff is $$$$$$$$$$ So... I just used rotella 15 40 thats the same oil i use in the rodeo and i buy it by the gal.. had a lil left and poured in it the jeeps tranny... its spose to have a higher zinc content..... :dunno: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The parts room at my dealership used to have an "official" factory list of all the recommended fluids. I haven't seen a recent update. Can you check to confirm whether or not the factory is now calling for motor oil in the AX-15 (and AX-5?) tranny? Last I knew the factory was still calling for 80W90 GL5 for the BA10/5 -- is that still current also? And what about the NV3550 that's in the new TJs and XJs? I think that tranny can use the new Pennzoil "Synchormesh" gear juice. Pennzoil told me that's the tranny it was developed for. True? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Eagle...I am looking for answers, but there has been no "printed" guides like that for years that I have seen. As far as I know, the -AX- & BA10/5 trannies still use 75w90 / 80w90 gear oil and I have found nothing to make me believe any different. I have found some info on the Internet suggesting that a 50 weight motor oil can be used as a replacement...but I can not confirm that. I guess JT will be letting us know how that works for now ;) . The research I have done so far says the the Pennziol Synchromesh is an acceptable substitute for the 4874464 (MS-9224) Mopar NV3500 Manual Transmission Fluid that we sell here for the NV3550.
