savannahjeep Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 I need to replace the rear main seal on my 4.0 liter in-line 6. The repair book states to remove the transmittion. I have read a couple of other entries and they state I will not have to remove the transmittion just remove the oil pan. Is this true? can someone help me?Please explain. Thanks
tjbliley Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 remove oil pan. loosen cap on the end. emphasise on loosen. rotate seal out with new seal. That is the quick and dirty of it. but you can do it without removign the tranny. The actual job is a little more indepth than this but that is the jist of it.
BLHTAZ Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Be sure that you insert the new seal in the correct direction. If you put it in backwards you will be pumping oil out faster than you can put it in. Also, be sure that you are careful with the new seal as any small nick or cut in it will leak VERY badly as well. You will need to purchase an oil pan gasket too.
Oizarod115 Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 get an oil pan gasket for a 95 4.0 cherokee, that way its a one piece and very easy to deal with compared to the older ones (same thing just multiple pieces.) its MUCH easier on a lift and look up the torque specs on the bearing cap. its stages i think 40-70-80 ft/lb stages. you may have to take the starter out to get to some of the oil pan bolts. and use a brass punch or something to knock the seal out and then grab the part that sticks down with some pliers. here's a good write-up. http://www.myjeeprocks.com/feature/rear-main-seal-removal-and-installation/ except i didn't need to drop the exhaust like he did :dunno:
maddzz1 Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 You can buy a seal with a double lip. Thet have them on napa.com
Wildman Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Also, go.jeep has a really good write up on changing the rear seal, with color pictures :D http://gojeep.willyshotrod.com/HowtoRearMain.htm
Oizarod115 Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 You can buy a seal with a double lip. Thet have them on napa.com i suggest a MOPAR part... i used an offbrand and ended up doing it again. it worked the second time. i think the mopar seal was like 3 dollars more or something. DEFINITELY worth it. go factory with all important stuff
WahooSteeler Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Wildman, nice link. Like the saying goes, a picture says a 1000 words.

Wildman Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 The only ones I've seen listed are the Double lipped seals. Places like rockauto, and advance only list a double lip rear main seal. You might have read that the single lip seal in no longer available :dunno:
