Changing gauge cluster question

I really want to change out my cluster for one that has a tach. I know that I need to have one with the cable drive Speedo, but is there any restrictions on what year will work with my 88 MJ 6 cyl? Does it matter what FI or Ign. system the donor vehicle had? 4 or 6 cyl?

 

Currently mine has: Speedo, Oil press, temp, volts, and the Big fuel gauge with an idiot light for low fuel in the bottom left corner.

As long as it has the cable speedo I believe you should be ok. The speedo itself is swappable too, so you can keep your current odometer setting, but you won't get the tripometer that comes with the full cluster. apparently The 4 or 6cyl matters for the accuracy of the tach, although my 91 4cyl has a cluster from a 92 6cyl and the tach works just fine.

Yes...be sure to get one from a 6cyl. I just did this swap in my '88. It is very easy.

 

You will need the temp sender for a guage and the oil pressure sender for a guage...both can be had at a parts store for little money. :cheers:

You need a cluster from an '88 thru '90. Late '87 MIGHT also work, but they made a change to the way the speedo cable attaches to the speedo and I'm not certain if it was a model year change or if was done mid-year in the 1987 model run. Stick with '88 thru '90 to be safe. If I understand your post, you already have gauges, so you do NOT need any new sending units, just the cluster itself. You need new sending units only when replacing idiot lights with gauges.

I just removed the 2 retaining srews on the back of both speedos and swapped them out. It was much easier, you don't have to worry about finding the "right" one, and your mileage will be correct.
