Darren Posted January 23, 2008 Share Posted January 23, 2008 I can't get a straight answer about how this swaps out from anyone. on the left is what i took out of the new t-case witch incudes a 35 tooth gear and on the right is what was in my factory t-case that my mechanical speedo plugged in to and that includes a 29 tooth gear. what do i do and or need to buy to get my cable to plug into my new case? tjbliley Posted January 23, 2008 Share Posted January 23, 2008 What kind of case was in there? Was it a 207? If it was you may need a new gear for the 231. You should be able to swap the gear into the holder and put it in and it should work. The drive gear in the case is about an inch and a half long I think so it should still engage the speedo gear. JeepcoMJ Posted January 23, 2008 Share Posted January 23, 2008 use the one that CAME from your vehicle. it should engage, I see no reason why it shouldn't. in case you don't know, the speedo gears were pretty much interchangeable. worse thing comes to worse, disassemble your tail housing from the old t-case and same on the new one, then swap the drivers out. and no, it won't be too long. stick the gears in both "mounts" (sensors) and compare them. they'll stick out the same lengths. I'm gonna need you to spell this one out for me i am so confused. christ NO! use the one that CAME from your vehicle.. in other words, the one that was IN YOUR TRUCK when you took it apart is the one you need, UNLESS you've lifted the truck and put larger-than-stock, in which case you need to order the correct one. The short and long shaft speedo gears are not interchangible. 87-91 used the long shaft, 92+ used the short shaft. It sounds like you swapped in the 92+ tcase on the left. So you will need a 29 tooth short shaft speedo gear IF you did not change tire size and/or regear. Pete M Posted January 23, 2008 Share Posted January 23, 2008 The plastic gear can be pulled from the steel shaft and swapped. I did it to mine. My 91 must be an oddball between-the-years thing then. My speedo gear uses the long shaft, has the electronic speedo, and the electronic pickup in the picture is identical to mine. And I have the shaft offset groups for the different diameter gears. The housing is the same as the long shaft housing too in the picture, and it looks like the mechanical and electronic pickups will interchange. But maybe only on the 91 model I suspect now.
