Is this to mnch?

ifixit, no such thing as a swb Laredo, at least for 88 and i believe for all years.

BUT, that's a little misleading. they just called it a different trim package. in 2wd short bed form, the equivalent could be had as the eliminator, and in 4wd form, the chief.

i also learned a few interesting things just recently. you could NOT get the off road pkg AND the Big Ton pkg together. I also realized why i've had such a hard time finding a factory chrome rear. according to the 88 sales brochure, a "bright" rear bumper was available as an option on the Laredo models only. In fact, the only model MJ that came with any rear bumper standard was the Eliminator. Rear bumpers were an option on all other models, including the Laredo. So, like Hornbrod said, a Laredo pkg, even as the top trim level, did not necessarily completely spec an MJ out. But back then, it was not as common for people to walk in a dealer and "custom order" a vehicle like they do today. So, when a dealer ordered a model of vehicle with the highest trim pkg, they usually also added on a lot of the other goodies to make it substantially upgraded over the base and mid trim level trucks. Hence the reason Laredo's are rare because not only were they not built in mass as Hornbrod also pointed out, but they also DID usually have a lot of extra options that just are not found that often on the other models.

Like Hornbrod, I wanted a Laredo and patiently looked for over a year before finding my 88 Laredo. In addition to Auto Trader's from 2 regions, I religiously checked every online source DAILY and I think mine was maybe the 3rd Laredo I saw for sale, particularly with full factory pwr pkg's etc. and the only one in decent shape. Of course it's easy to add a lot of these options to your truck now, but you have to find the parts and do the work. Not a big deal for a lot of you, but I'm glad I didn't have to mess with it AND I'm one of those anal types that likes knowing mine is factory.

Roger - I know I've seen that MJ some place ;)

I think it sold on e-bay last week, and went for more than his asking price, I had it tagged, but took it off, anyone else see it??

Would have been a good priced project / finisher :D

Not sure. Maybe Wildman can answer. Last time I tried I was wrong. :oops:

I would @$$/u/me is does, I doubled checked -

The 5th digit of the vin is the Powertrain-

The 6th & 7th digit of the vin is the "body type"-

63 = Jeep Comanche - 4wd - 6'

64 = Jeep Comanche - 2wd - 6'

65 = Jeep Comanche - 4wd - 7'

66 = Jeep Comanche - 2wd - 7'

And to complete the list on the 8th digit -

The list you posted was for the 4001 - 5000 GVW

For over 5001 - 6000 GVW (For Comanche)

F = Comanche Base (MT/BT)

F = Comanche - Custom (MT)

R = Comanche Pioneer (MT/BT)

U = Comanche Laredo (MT/BT)

Note: there only one other vehicle on the 5001-6000 GVW list, and that a N = Grand Wagoneer/J10

Foot note: MT = Metric Ton and BT = Big ton

Hope this help you find what "you" have, but I agree, what's been posted, any Comanche could be "Custom" ordered at the time, the window sticker I have for the '88 proves that.

In fact, the only model MJ that came with any rear bumper standard was the Eliminator. Rear bumpers were an option on all other models, including the Laredo.

I have to disagree on the bumper statement above (but the rest was all correct AFAIK :cheers: ). "Bright" or "chrome" step bumpers were available for all models (base thru Eliminator/Laredo) through the 86-88 production run via special order. The 86-87 and the 88 carried different part numbers for the chrome bumper assemblies; the only difference being the license plate lamps. I was lucky enough to find one of the last 86-87 factory chrome bumpers a few years ago up in an old AMC warehouse in MN. $185 shipped to my door. It included the face plate, end caps, step plates, brackets, and the plate lights w. wiring harness. But you're SOL now if trying to find a new original; they're all gone. :oops: Unless someone has one laying around in their garage and it shows up on FleaBay. I wouldn't be that surprised either. :D

I recently picked up a mint 1988 Comanche Sales Brochure (way cool IMO, I plan to post pics), and that's where I got my info from. Of course we all know to take that with a grain of salt and that from the time the brochure went to press and actual orders were being taken, a lot probably changed in what was available, and/or could be done as a dealer "special order" as you noted.

Not talking particularly about you Brett. But how can anyone even give a valid guesstimate w/o even seeing it?

For me simple,I wouldn't give a grand for any 4cy std shift MJ with any trim level. I don't care what it looks like.

Thats me I want and automatic,4x4,4.0L if spending in that range or above

yeah...

manchedude, I won't (or I should say Don't since I'm good at finding them cheap) pay that much either. the most I ever payed for a comanche was 1300, and that was for the 89 that TNT now has (dana 44 rear, 4wd, new everything front and nice exhaust, bedcap, a/c, vent-wing, split rear, cruise (that works), 5 speed.

other than that, the 3800 cost me (well my dad originally payed for it..) $300. steve's (my bro's) was $500 but it was running and driving with real nice bed. Dad's was $200 and it's a turbo diesel. I've gotten 2 for free, one for $150, one for $70, one for $250, one for $200, one for $50, and a few others too.

but,

if I found one with a CLEAN body, at this point, I'd pay $1000 for it if I had the cash. to me, a good body is worth the money. I couldn't care less about the drivetrain, there are plenty of donor's out there.

you must be rich lol to want to through money away

and you must be naive to think that you're gonna find a nice body for cheaper than that, with the parts needed that your cherokee doesn't have, and get it built for cheaper than the cost of a truck like wahoosteeler's

no offense at all, but you honestly won't find a mj with a good body, all the rear and lower interior trim, wiring from the cab on back, good tail lights, good cab corners, rear flares, rear window, cab vents, and comanche seat brackets for anything under that. frankly, you're asking ALOT out of a comanche.

either way...you'll end up buying a piece of crap, or you'll have to shell out some cash and buy a nicer truck, with a lesser drivetrain than yours, OR buy a nice one with the same drivetrain.

at that point, you may as well sell the cherokee and talk to someone like me who can find you a decent comanche. for instance, I know where a 1987 2wd shortbed 4.0 is sitting that I could get you for $600, that just needs some sanding and filling, and the typical wheel well problems, with 2 spots on the floor to be patched (really not too bad anywheres though). I also know where there is a 4wd 4.0 auto 1990 eliminator that I can have for $500 although cost to anyone else from the owner would be higher, and it just needs rockers and some rear flare work.

in your expected price range you'll spend the difference on gas or you'll get a piece of $#!&.

hornbrod, :D it's not hard-earned. It grows on my money tree... :nuts:
