I am wanting to upgrade my Comanche to have a Dana/Spicer 44 rear end.  I will be towing a boat and want a stronger unit.  I will upgrade the unit to a 4.10/4.07 if it is not already set up. I am in South Carolina, but can pick up any location east of the Mississippi River.  Would consider crossing the river if not going too far.

Are you dead set on it being a D44 for originality? Otherwise, a C8.25 from an XJ or KJ would be a good option.

I like the D44 for the ease of installation.  The spring mounts are exactly the way they need to be.  I don't know what it would take to modify one of the other options you mentioned.  The easier they are to install the more I would be willing to switch.

For the most part, it should just be the spring mounts and shock mounts that need changing. The nice thing about the Liberty axles is that they could be had with 4.10 gears. You would be time and money ahead changing the mounts on a 8.25 with 4.10s as opposed to buying a D44 and getting it regeared.

do you cut the mounts off the old D35 and weld onto the Liberty axle or do you obtain them form another source?  Lots of Libertys in the junk yards.

You could just cut them off of the D35, but a lot of companies make new leaf spring mounts. I would buy new spring mounts personally.

Agreed.  New weld on spring perches and shock mounts aren't hideously expensive.

Thanks - I will look at the liberty

One thing to note with the Liberty is that it is a little bit wider than an XJ rear. It actually makes the rear tires fit the width of the bedside.
