robfg67
I have a 1988 MJ with the 2.5L, the 5-Speed Manual AX5, and it is 2WD. From looking through the factory parts manual, it appears that the AX5 transmission for my application changed on 10/4/88 and I'm not sure of the build date of this Jeep. This transmission was used on all MJ's and XJ's from 87-90, but there are two different ones used. Questions: 1. Would it matter which version I sourced? Are they interchangeable? How can you tell what the differences are? 2. My '88 is 2WD. Does it matter if I get a replacement one that was mated to a transfer case? eaglescout526
What? Where is it said that the AX5 changes? As far as most Jeep owners are aware, the 5 didn’t change between 1984 up until it was discontinued which I don’t know that year. Anyways the only differences you’ll find is in 84-86 they had an external slave which is hell of an upgrade. Then 87-91 they were internal and 92 and up were back to external slaves. Should be the same across the board.

If you want to keep it 2wd then source a 2wd transmission. If you ever want to swap to 4wd then get a 4wd transmission and transfer case.
robfg67
Thanks for all the responses. I just added the VIN to the registry. The 87-90 Parts Catalog that I have in digital form lists on page 584 that the AX5 was changed on 10/4/88 and has two different part numbers for the transmission: Pre 10/4/88: 5300 3024 Post 10/4/88: 5300 6169

robfg67
Crap, sorry about that. I forgot that I posted it to the registry already.
eaglescout526
I’m failing to see the difference. Chrysler likes to do that crap. Chances are it’s probably an internal component.
