The 'washers' I pulled off my '88 MJ were flat with a 'step' in them. The steep was for the difference between the Intake manifold and the header.

Interesting.  Those are different than the ones from my old XJ and my current MJ with a 2001 XJ head.

Yes, much different than the ones I had on my '98's and 2000 XJs.

I have never seen step washer on a manifold before. Both manifolds should have flanges that are the same thickness. They may have been there from a machine shop surfacing a warped header to get it back to flat.

I have seen them on another XJ in the PnP in New Ringgold. I think last year. Also, Banks claims there's is the only exhaust manifold with the same thickness as the Intake manifold. I just gave away or 'back' the two stock XJ manifolds I have. I might see if there is any difference between the Thorely and the Banks I have. I might be able to measure a stock one.
