Ignition lock

Recommended Posts

So #2 was bought w/out a key, no problem since the ignition turns. Well, while I was moving it the other day, I accidentally turned the ignition all the way back to the lock position. Doh! :wall:

Does anybody have a quick solution for how to unlock the ignition w/out tearing anything up? I tried the key from my 88 thinking if the tumblers were that worn out I might get lucky, but no chance. I don't have a steering wheel puller or any other exotic tools, so I'm hoping for a shade tree mechanic suggestion so I don't have to spend much, if any $$ since I am getting ready to sell it.

Thanks in advance for any help.............and please use the other variation of the KISS philosophy, K.I.S.C.I.A.S.

That would be: KEEP IT SIMPLE 'CAUSE I AM STUPID :dunce:

The ignition switch has nothing to do with this problem. The issue is the ignition cylinder has been allowed to get in the lock position and not much short of breaking it will move it. A mobile locksmith is likely to be your best alternative and then go to Advanced Auto (or similar) and buy a new cylinder that will come with keys ;) .

but he's not helping me any at $150! That's why I'm hoping for some ingenuity here.
 Woa...dude...that is not cool. I don't blame you for trying anything you can. I hope there is a way, but I am not sure that there is.

I've already got a new ignition, locks and keys on the way thanks to Jeepco. Already called a locksmith I've used for some rental property we own, but he's not helping me any at $150! That's why I'm hoping for some ingenuity here.

Drop me a PM, and I'll tell you how to get the ignition unlocked with out the locksmith showing up

try a dealer show them the registration and the vin. they could cut a key off that. but they might not because its so old. but its worth a shot. keys are usually under 10 bucks
I work in a Jeep dealership in the Parts Dept...it is too old for that ;) . Our computers will no longer bring up key codes for anyting past about '92-'94.

Dealer was the first place I called and I already knew the answer but gave it a shot. No dice.

My company uses this locksmith a fair amount, so I haven't worked him on that number yet. But, he's a bit of an @$$ so at best he'd probably still hit me for $100. The guy I bought it from said he knows a guy that can pull an ignition for cheap, but he hasn't called me back yet, so I don't know what "cheap" is. It might be the same $100 if he knows what a locksmith would charge.

So................Wildman, PM on the way! Hook me up brother!

  • 3 weeks later...

Ok, got the replacement ignition, got in touch w/the free lance locksmith, he said @$80. Just looking for some support to suck up the $80 and be done with it, I guess that's a hell of a lot better than the $150 I started out w/the other guy. I just hate it because my brain fart is gonna cost me $100 (including new lock set). :wall:
