It was a flat(-ish) washer that pressed on. Anybody use these thread cutting nuts successfully on a jeep? That is what is on all the letters I have taken off which is 3 different sets. If you are looking for something different a push nut could also work but the are very difficult to remove. None of my letters have threads on them and I broke nearly every single push nut while I was taking them off for paint.
