Looks like Crown and a few other manufacturers make a whole new shaft (most likely out of junk parts because of the price). Borgeson makes one that's made in the USA with a 5 year warranty for $313: https://www.borgeson.com/1984-1996-Cherokee-and-Wagoneer-XJ.html

That said, the u-joint stuff should be fairly universal. Just would need to know the spline counts and diameter and/or the size of the DD shaft.

I looked into this like 10+ years ago, but couldn’t find parts. I’m interested to see if they can be found now.

The replacement involves some machining to do it nicely. The U joints are peened in and would have to be ground out, and replacements would be peened or tacked back in.

I did have success with the crown shaft in my ‘88 MJ and also in a ‘95 YJ.

I went the Borgeson route on the last build. I wasn’t confident in the original steering shaft’s collapsibility in the event of an accident after decades of oxidation. I bet though, that Borgeson will also have repair and replacement parts that could work with the oem shaft.

I bought a Crown one a few years ago and it's been fine. My OEM one broke and would slip without turning the steering box. Luckily it was at low speed, very scary.
