dastrius
Hey all! Got kind of an odd issue. Recently put my clutch and trans back together in my truck and took her on it's maiden voyage since owning it and fixing it. Drove 20 Miles and clutch pedal got stuck. TLDR; I realized I'm missing the clutch fork spring that retains the clutch fork back from getting too far from the external slave cylinder. From what I remember, the truck was missing that spring since I got it, and didn't notice it was missing the first time around. I work at O'reilly, so I poked through some other forums on here and found PN 4338855. Got it, and attempted to put it back on my trans, but I feel like I'm not installing it correctly. Any insight or advice would be insanely helpful. Thanks in advance! Here's some pics of how its currently sitting.
eaglescout526
So this set up is a different animal. I installed this on my 88. There is no spring. The clutch pressure plate will naturally push the clutch bearing and fork back. That spring you put on is for the later 91-when ever Chrysler stops putting manuals in. Now when you say it’s stuck, does it not move at all in either direction or does it just hit a spot on travel and go ding?
89 MJ
The 2.5L doctor beat me here I see. I was just going to say that this site can host photos too, so there's no need to use imgur unless you prefer to.
dastrius
Hmm okay. When I hopped in and the pedal was stuck, I couldn't even push the pedal down more than an inch. It felt like the system between the pedal and slave had built way too much pressure. When we disconnected the slave from the bell housing, the pedal was still stiff, which made me think the slave was faulty. But once we opened the bleeder, the pressure went away. From taking the inspection plate off, it had looked like the clutch fork came to far forward and the slave plunger fell out of the divet it rides in on the fork. I assumed it was due to not having a spring to keep it tight against the slave.

Aww okay, I've just heard of the whole PhotoBucket Dilemma and figured I'd use imgur, didn't know cc hosted pics. I'll have to start using that. Thank you! eaglescout526
Do you have the plastic cone on the end of the slave rod? That will stop your travel and make a stiff pedal as you basically reach the maximum extension of the slave cylinder
dastrius
Oh, I hadn't even known there was supposed to be a cone on the end, do you happen to have pic of it at all?
eaglescout526
This broke on my MJ and cause my clutch to barely work and have a stiff pedal like your problem.

You are absolutely awesome! Thank you! Definitely makes a lot more sense, not having that.
eaglescout526
Bada-bing! No problem at all. Hopefully that cone doesn’t cost an unnecessary arm and a leg like they seem to do.

87MJTIM
Sorry to hijack this, but... Does that part fit on the tip of the slave cylinder push rod? My AX15 has trouble going in to 1st and 2nd when shifting. It is really difficult when starting from a stop light. I have to push really hard and often have to shift through other gears. There is no grinding of gears when shifting. With engine off, I can shift through all gears. My online research suggests that the clutch is not fully disengaging. Would the additional tip help with releasing the clutch? I had the same thing happen to my AX15 because the previous owner put the wrong type of fluid in it and it literally ate the brass synchros. Quickest way to confirm is to change the fluid in your transmission. If it has gold glitter in the fluid it is definitely your synchros.

Since I installed the AX15 I used either Pennzoil Syncromesh or tried 10/30 oil. Syncros are something I need to inspect.

I know that cone fits a lot of the older clutch assemblies from the AMC era, I am not aware of there being one for the AX15. Now I suppose there probably is a similar thing on the slave and it could be over extending to where you get some disengagement but not enough.
