CheepComanche
I was looking to rebuild my np207 as the slip yoke has a lot of play and creates a clunking noise at low speed. It feels similar to a bad U-joint and lots of oil is leaking out as I drive. However, I can't seem to find a rebuild kit for the np207 so I though I might as well swap in an np231. Before I go looking for another t-case I want to be sure what is compatible with my ax5 trans.
Pete M
you'll want a 21 spline, so anything found behind an 87+ 2.5L, a Peugeot, or an 87-90 AW4.
eaglescout526
No rebuild kit for the 207? Interesting. The 228/9 I could believe but not the 207.
Pete M
don't forget that the 21 spline 242 is very rare (87-90 XJs with selectrac), but still out there to be found.

I'm pretty sure my trans and t-case are from 1986. Does that make a difference?
eaglescout526
No. All the Renix years are 21 spline. He’s just helping you out with upgrading.

CheepComanche
After further consideration I think I can get away with just replacing the rear output shaft bearing. I’ve never messed with a t-case before, what all goes into replacing the rear bearing?
derf
A transfer case is easy-ish to rebuild. I would say that if one bearing is going out, all of them probably have excessive wear. And if you're replacing one you should replace them all while it's apart. Which goes back to no kit for the 207 unfortunately.
eaglescout526
I can’t imagine it would be hard to take the bearing off, go to your local auto parts store and compare. I can also look at the parts manual and get some numbers on the bearings.
CheepComanche
I took the tail shaft off the t-case and found the bearing to be fine and the play to be in the slip yoke. What can be done to fix this? Also would this play cause the clunking sound at slow speed?
CheepComanche
I’ve ordered a new tail housing so I’ll have to wait and see if that fixes the problem. I think the bushing in there was completely worn out.

CheepComanche
Replacing the tail housing bushing hasn't changed the amount of play. I'm planning on getting a new yoke to see if that's the problem but if its not I'll probably swap over to an np231.
CheepComanche
Does the np207 use the same slip yoke as the np231?
