Transfer Case Compatibility

Recommended Posts

I was looking to rebuild my np207 as the slip yoke has a lot of play and creates a clunking noise at low speed. It feels similar to a bad U-joint and lots of oil is leaking out as I drive. However, I can't seem to find a rebuild kit for the np207 so I though I might as well swap in an np231. Before I go looking for another t-case I want to be sure what is compatible with my ax5 trans.

No. All the Renix years are 21 spline.

almost.  AX-15s are all 23 spline.  :L:  but all AX-5s are 21 spline, so you can look for later years of XJ.  :D

A transfer case is easy-ish to rebuild.

I would say that if one bearing is going out, all of them probably have excessive wear.  And if you're replacing one you should replace them all while it's apart.  Which goes back to no kit for the 207 unfortunately.

I’ve ordered a new tail housing so I’ll have to wait and see if that fixes the problem. I think the bushing in there was completely worn out.

You beat me to it, I was going to recommend exactly what you are doing with the bushing...
