I bought a very cheap 88 Comanche over Christmas, and the driver's door lock has been a little sticky. The passenger lock I was told will not work with the key.

Anyway, trying to open it last night, I heard the distinctive rattle of something fall from the driver's lock inside the door. :headpop:

So..is there an easy way to open this locked passenger door from the outside without calling a locksmith, seeing as there are so many handy people here?

Thanks,

Darcy

A coathanger and a pocket knife works quite well. Straighten the hanger, then bend it into a L with the lower part of the L being about 3" long, and the bend being about 80* (measuring hte inside of the bend). Take the knife and push back the weather stripping on the door glass, and slide in the coathanger. You're aiming to snag the lock cable about half way down the door, so slide it down about that far and turn the hanger and bit and yard up. It'll take a bunch of tries if you've never done it before.

Now, if your ignition key doesn't work... Wait, I shouldn't get into that.

Nope...you shouldn't. :D

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. :)

Okay, that doesn't seem to be working.

The tumbler on the driver's side door is loose, and will slide out, but not all the way, as it is connected on the inside to something I can't see.

I tried the passenger side, but I'm not having any luck. Where exactly is this cable, where does it go, and which way do I turn the hanger to grab it?

Thanks.

if the tumbler will slide out, you can take the clothes hanger, stick it in on the bottom side of the tumbler, and pry upwards after you feel it catch on the lever on the back of the tumbler.

this will unlock it.

what fell out was most likely the holder for the tumbler fell out.

I took a pair of pliers, cranked the whole tumbler, and it turned the lock for me. Only problem is whoever was messing with the tumbler last night can now do the same.

Oh well, I got in and got rid of everything to take...hopefully they don't take the Comanche itself. That'd be a good $36 down the drain.

so you'll be wanting a set of door locks with spare keys and matching glovebox lock then right? pm me if you do, I've got the set that I removed from the 3800 since I swapped to single key entry and ignition, as well as 2 pairs of ignition and door sets (they just don't have the glovebox door set)

Thanks, but I might be able to source some locally here. If not, I'll send you a request. :)

Thanks all for the help.

Yeah, right between Calgary and Edmonton, west of Red Deer about 15 minutes.
