Cranking no start

Recommended Posts

Starting issues. So my I just out a new harness and engine in my comanche and now it's turning over but not starting. Has compression and gets air just tested a spark plug and it had spark as well. Before I put the engine in I turned they key and watched fuel come out of the hose closest to the intake so I think it's getting it to the rail. Would this possibly be my cps? 4.0 5 speed

Using a voltmeter or 12vdc testlight (preferred) check for Battery_Voltage_(B+) on the following pins (use battery_negative terminal for ground):
D1_5:  B+ (Hot at all times)
D2_4:  B+ (Hot during KEY ON/CRANKING).
D1_6:  KEY ON (B+ (Hot for 2-3 seconds)) or CRANKING (B+ (Hot during CRANK)).

So do I need to have it cranking while I test these?

Yes. You should see voltage (B+) on those pins while cranking.

And what do they mean if not Power.

D1_5: Fusible Link for Fuel Pump Relay.

D2_4: Ignition Switch.

D1_6: Fuel Pump side of the Fuel Pump Relay.

No I do not. Nothing on the driver side fender well

Okay. Just needed to be sure your fuel pump wasn't getting its voltage just from the Starter Relay during CRANK.

You "watched" the fuel coming out? You shoulda been "dodging" the fuel spraying everywhere.

It was just coming out of the small rubber hose that connects to the fuel rail at the time. It would just pour out when I hit the button. Is that bad?

When you say you put a new engine and harness in, has the engine ever been ran, prior to putting it in? Have you checked the timing? Will it start if you spray starting fluid in the throttle body?

He has spark. wouldn't have that if CPS was weak or failed.

He has spark -- but he hasn't conformed that the spark is occurring when the #1 cylinder is at or near top-dead-center on the compression stroke. He could have the distributor installed 180 degrees out of time.

The distributor was 180 off and it was running for two days. Started putting my interior in and now no spark again and the fuel pump does not prime.
