70barracuda
Cleaning up some knuckles. Ball joint inserts fought me the whole way but I got them out. The last few threads are pretty bad though. Anyone know the size so I can run a tap through? 1 inch / 8 is too small.
ghetdjc320
I thought they were a tapered thread but I may be wrong.

Yep, it’s a brass insert that goes into the lower knuckle ball joint hole in the pre 90’ knuckles. Sets the proper preload on the ball joints. The replacement insert comes in the spicer ball joint kit. You need a spanner socket to remove the old one.

That being said, this issue is only applicable to 4wd knuckles. I found that late 87 and what I can guess would be past 90 2wd knuckles don’t have the insert. At least the knuckles on my 88 doesn’t have them but the knuckles for the 86 2wd beam I have had them as they basically are 4wd knuckles with spindles in them. 70barracuda
Yeah it's the preload inserts for the ball joint. I'm using the 86 to 89 4wd knuckles for the wilwood brake kit. Pipe thread would make sense now that you mentioned it. It looks as though someone put a spot of weld at the very end so I'm just gonna see how it goes as is now.
