CCV Valve Replacement

I am getting excessive oil in my air breather. So much so that it leaked all over my driver shock, spring, and everything g else in that area. 
 

after researching I have decided to try the CCV on the valve cover. 
 

I went to autozone and got the grommet and valve for the front. 
 

They are different though from what I had in there.

 

the new valve (although same number on part) has a lip around the bottom. It won’t fit in the valve cover without the grommet much less with the grommet in there. 
 

the grommet may be correct but not sure. 
 

can someone tell me the part numbers I need for the valve and grommet? 
 

also, I have the elbow valve up front but just a straight port with hose stuck in on the rear. 
 

Should I replace the rear also? 
 

if so part numbers?

That rear hose and grommet are available. See below.

 Below that will show you how to fix the root cause of the problem.

 

 

RENIX VACUUM HARNESSES

 

Vac harness 7151367

The vacuum harness that attaches to the front of the valve cover and includes the grommet/fitting, and is called the front harness, is Napa part number BK 715-1367 or is a Dorman 46003.

Vac harness 7151366

The vacuum harness that is closest to the air cleaner, EGR etc, and is called the rear harness, is Napa part number BK 715-1366 or is a Dorman 46004.

Vac harness 7151365

The tube from the rear of the valve cover to the intake manifold is part number BK 715-1365 or Dorman 46005 and comes with the valve cover grommet.

The Throttle Body to MAP hose is no longer available. Click HERE to access a fix for that.

CRUISER’S VALVE COVER MOD

Most early and even later Renix 4.0s could be bothered by excessive oil in the air cleaner box.

A fix from my old days as Service Manager at a Jeep dealership follows. Information was provided to me from a buddy at JeepTech during those days. I don’t believe it ever came out in a Technical Service Bulletin.

Remove the valve cover and turn it over. Next, remove the fluted tubes that are now facing you by removing three screws on each.

Valve cover flute

Chop 1 inch off each of them. Then, drill a half inch hole as shown in the photo. The flat side of the flute that’s closest to the edge of the valve cover. valve cover flutes (2)

 

Clean and de-burr/sand all rough edges nicely, clean with solvent, and reinstall. Don’t be concerned about the chintzy gaskets that will probably crumble into oblivion when you remove the fluted tubes. They can go back together without gaskets.

Is the front elbow valve not available? I have been to several parts stores and they can't even find what it is much less sell me one.

Keep in mind that the '87 -90 Renix 4.0L engines did not have a CCV "valve." There is no valve. The closed crankcase ventilation was supposed to be regulated by the small size of the tube off the rear of the valve cover. That rear tube is the suction side. The hose and fitting going into the front of the valve cover is supposed to be the fresh air inlet side of the air flow circuit.

 

What happens is that the tiny suction tube gets clogged, so the crankcase can't release pressure through the correct path. The alternate is to push the oily fumes backward through the inlet -- which comes from the air cleaner box, so that's where the oil ends up collecting.

There was a part number on plastic elbow that was in my valve cover front. There is a larger hole in the bottom of it. When I went to auto zone they looked it up by number and gave me what I thought was the same one. Once I got it home I pulled the old one out   
 

The new one had a ring all the way around that would not let it even fit in the valve cover without the grommet. It darn sure wouldn’t fit with it. 
 

The new one also has a much smaller hole. 
 

Today though I ordered all the parts above so when they get in hopefully I’ll be back in business. 
 

here is a couple photos to show the one I took out and the one that I got from Auto Zone. Notice the difference in hole size on the bottom. 
 

I folded down the ring so it would fit but still don’t fit with the grommet so that’s why I ordered the above parts.

Yours looks like someone adapted a later CCV elbow. The '93-97 Grand Cherokee (ZJ) had these and the 1996-2001 Cherokees (XJ) had these on the pressed steel Valve Covers. The  ZJ valve covers do show up on XJs sometimes. I think as a replacement. I do use the ZJ VCs on my 2000 XJ. It gives me the newer CCV system with an aluminum VC. The 96-2001 XJ and later 4.0L have a larger rear tube. This is also suppose to help with oil control. I have done the mod Cruiser shows to the ZJ valve cover. If you use the ZJ VC and the big tube, then you will need to lengthen the tube if used on a RENIX intake. I did that on my '88 MJ. I also found that the seal between the VC and the head needs to be good. I use the FelPro silicone seal. I think about $30-50.

Neither the original part nor the [incorrect] replacement part is a valve. Those are only inlet adapters -- i.e. fittings.

Just want to update and say that I ordered the front and rear vacuum harness as Cruiser54 showed above as well as the rear vent and that appears to have fixed my problem. 
 

while I was at it I changed the oil, oil filter and air filter as well as cleaned up all the oil from the leak. I drove the truck all weekend no signs of leaking anymore. Thanks
