OldSch88L
I got my new dash installed and was testing everything before the final reassembly. Pretty much everything works, exept B-pillar lights, footwell lights and the clock acted up. They barely worked intermitently, the lights being a dim orange. Now, none of them work, including the glove box light. The radio works but has no memory, and these results point to the dome fuse. All the fuses are OK, and I pulled out the dome fuse and put my multimeter leads on the fuse box terminals, and there's no power, while it should be hot at all times. I swapped the XJ dash with its as-new harness and fuse box following an how-to that I found here to match the wiring to the MJ. Could it be the black tar-like goo at the firewall fusebox connector causing trouble, or a fusible link somewhere? I tried everything I could, but electricity and wiring is not my cup of tea (translation: I freakin' hate it!) hahaha!
Minuit
What year is the donor harness from?

Well, it's a Renix era; the seller tought it was an '88 but wasn't sure, as he got it from a parts stash included with an XJ project... But I'm pretty sure I saw a 1990 date stamped on the cable-driven cluster that came in it.
cruiser54
Factory radio? If not, unplug it and see if your problem goes away.

OldSch88L
Well, I finally found the culprit; turns out XJ and MJ dash harnesses aren't always plug and play. The wire that feeds power to my particular XJ dash's dome fuse, red with white tracer, comes to a dead end on pin A6 on the XJ bulkhead connector, while it's actually on pin D4 on the MJ connector. Weird...
Pete M
I just assume every single year and model and individual Renix Jeep is different than then next when it comes to wiring.

I guess that's not far from the truth... Another curveball I had was that all the diagrams I could find said that constant 12V in the dash was the red/tan wire, while it's a pink wire in that XJ dash. The only thing left figuring out is the darn clock wiring because neither the wiring nor the connector match any info I could find...

It and its pinout changed frequently.

OldSch88L
Finally figured the clock on my own. For those interested, the wires coming out the clock are: Red Constant 12V Black Ground Blue Acc 12V Yellow Park Lamps (usually the orange/black tracer wire in the dash) Orange Panel Illumination ( was a blue wire in my dash, varying voltage controlled by the light switch's dimmer ) Hope this saves the next person some time! Pete M
I think there's a clock wiring diagram in the link in my signature. how does yours compare to it?

Well, I went through your master index twice and couldn't find it. In fact, any info on that quartz clock with that particular blue connector is scarce even on the web. Most people seem to have the one with a black connector?
Pete M
huh, I guess it didn't get included. lemme see if I can find it...
