Need help with Booster/MC replace

Folks, what I'm looking for is an "order of work" to start this. I have an 88 MJ. I run stock size tires, so I'm just replacing stock with stock. All of the DIY's I've found are for upgrading and haven't been a straight-up, basic, replacement vid or write-up.

 

For example: Do I take the old booster and MC off as one unit?

Is there prep before I remove anything? Plugging hoses, draining, etc.?

 

There is plenty of info on specific tasks, but I'm not finding the "hand-holding", for lack of a better term, that guides me where to start.

 

I hope this makes sense. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Right now, start spraying all the brakeline connections with PB Blaster or 50/50 Acetone and ATF mix. Do that for a few days in advance, at least 2-4 times a day. 

 

The reason for this is the nuts like to freeze onto the lines. So you will turn the nut out and twist the line off at the same time. Then you are stuck trying to remake brakelines, which is easy enough to do, but still a pain in the rear. 

 

Make sure you are using actual flare wrenches. Anything else will just round it off or booger it up. 

 

When you get to taking the lines off, crack it loose using the flare wrench, then immediately tighten it back up. Keep working it back and forth, slowly and progressively undoing it. From my experience this has the best chance of NOT breaking a bunch of stuff, even though it takes a lot of time and becomes annoying. Just don't rush it. I also like to spray more panther pee while undoing things. It probably doesn't do any good, but makes me feel better.

I just recently did this. Like has been said start soaking things in pb blaster or equivalent a few days before, and make sure you have a good set of flare wrenches for the lines.  They strip easily.  Be sure you have plenty of fluid on hand for bleeding after you hook everything back up.  I went ahead and bench bled the new master or  or you can gravity bleed it, before you start taking things apart. I used this video for reference...

 

 

Anyone feel free to chime in or correct me on this process...

 

Start by removing brake lines from master cylinder.  There should be two and they are different sizes.  

 

Next remove the two nuts holding the MC to the booster and pull the master off of the booster.

 

Moving on to the booster...first you will want to go in the cab and remove the nut holding the booster rod to the brake pedal. It should slide off of the holding pin and you will have a loose pedal.  There will be 4 nuts holding the booster to the firewall. Remove these and the booster should come free.  Installation is the opposite of removal, fairly straight forward. 

 

After you reinstall, double check your master for air, then follow the correct bleed procedure as referenced in the DIY section. 

 

I had a little trouble lining the booster up when reinstalling but if you fiddle with it enough the holes will line up.

I will add that, depending on age, I highly recommend you take time to stretch out before attacking the bolts under the dash. I actually unbolted my drivers seat and removed it so I could lay down to get at them. Overkill you say? Maybe, but it made it MUCH easier.

 

Indeed, I'm 39 and pretty active but I was still feeling it the next day haha.  Its definitely a tight fit and weird angle under there.

I'm 55, but also 6' 4". I'm sure it will be an adventure!

i'm only 5'11" but I'm 220 and 66 years old. it took me years to figure a way of working under the dash but back then i knew i had to be prepared for old age. my solution? the newest updated honey under dash repair wife. with the new honey under dash repair wife you'll no longer have head rushes while coming out from under your dash for that wire splicing tool you forgot. the honey under the dash tool will do the job for you. headlight switch burn up, easy as 1, 2, 3. the tool as we refer to it,(oh, note to self, don't talk about the tool in the 3rd person, it hates that) even cleans up after it's self. my tool is the upgraded unit, i ordered it with the FSM's for the 87 Comanche, my sons 96 XJ. the 02 Ram, and with my 1 free import FSM included with purchase i got the 1986 BMW 3 series. below we see the tool replacing the brake light switch. i highly recommend the Honey Under the Dash repair tool.

Also available in both dish and cloths washing models and the soon to be released Netflix and chill, and shoulder massaging versions. they were going to release a cooking model but it was cancelled due to burning toast problems that could not be worked out.
