Homemade spring perches

Recommended Posts

Has anybody made their own lift or lowering perches?

I'm wanting to lower my MJ a little bit with my 8.8 swap and was going to make my own perches 1" taller than stock (1.5" from axle tube)

Was just wondering if anybody had. Isn't any different than blocks, right? Except they're permanent

I see no reason that wouldn't work great. except for the aforementioned permanence, which is honestly not all that permanent.
Right. I want probably at least 2" drop anyways so a permanent 1" wouldn't be a problem at all. Then I'll do the xj shackle for the 2nd inch and see how that looks.

The XJ shackle is good for 1/2 inch. It's such a small amount and brings with it the chance of inversion coming down off a lift, that I don't advise it. Go with blocks or a mix of flatter leafs.  :L:

Wouldn't be too hard to do, download Fusion 360, make a drawing with the plate flat (not bent), save it as a .dxf and send it to a laser shop
I was just going to drill a 3.25" hole in a piece of 2.5"x6" tube and then cut it in half and I have 2 perches

Well, perches will be a little harder make than I thought. Gotta buy a hole saw then I can do it I think

But on a different subject kinda,
Why do they call out ZJ v8 REAT coils? Wouldn't the front be the beefy spring? Are the rear springs different between 6 and 8 cylinder?

7" with 3 holes for 1in adjustments and will combat spring wrap. I would look into ubolt eliminator setups. Best of both worlds.
Ya, ill have to make new bottom plates so might look into it. What is the "advantage" to u bolt eliminators in your opinion? Using bolts instead of u bolts?

And am I correct that the explorer 8.8 is a 3.25" axle tube?

Advantage being similar to the 7in long perches in combating axle wrap.  Also can intragate a 1/2" to 1.5" lift, and the obvious being can use bolts vs u bolts. Also can use top plate as air bag or bump stop mounting location. Utilize a three hole set up and you can stretch wheel base out an inch or in an inch and can possibly help you avoid driveshaft mods. I ran this setup with my 8.8 swap and loved it. Used the ability to add an inch to wb to avoid driveshaft mods. If making perches anyways then why not. :L:

I did this a long time ago with my 8.25 but the other way around from what you want to do. Kinda tough to see but here’s some ancient pictures from when I put the axle under my Eliminator:

See, I did the opposite of what you’re doing because of the 3” (90% sure they’re 3”, anyhow) axle tubes. I offset my perches because I didn’t want to lose any height when you figure the axle tube difference between the Dana 35 and the 8.25. On the top side, I added another block to be my bump stop spacer but it’s also another perch if I ever wanted to go spring over axle.

You’ll be just fine making up your own spring perches. Why bother with a hole saw though? Mine are 1/4” thick that I clamped together and just cut a 3” hole with a torch. Hole saws are noisy and slow.
