Apantozo
I'm about to swap engines and transmissions from a'93 automatic xj with an inline 6HO 4.0liter into my 1988 MJ manual tranny. The xj runs great but the Comanche doesn't run at all and I'm at a loss for why. I'm pulling my standard tranny with the engine and want to put everything from the xj into it changing the MJ into an automatic. Any tips?
89 MJ
Get an REM and do @cruiser54’s Renix tips before swapping engines. Odds are, changing the engine won’t fix your issue.
Apantozo
Why won't swapping engines and electrical systems and ECM work in the MJ but it works in the xj?
jdog
You didn't state you were going to change the wiring as well, it will work but will require some rewiring. But you should figure out why the original doesn't run
Apantozo
The original engine was the victim of sabatage. There's no telling what happened but I've tried everything suggested and it won't start. The distributor was broken off of the mounting bracket one morning last August and I've tried everything even taking it to a shop and there's no explanation for what could have happened
jdog
Got a picture? I bet it wasn't sabotage but a locked up gear, reading your other post id be checking if it was actually spinning, but since it sounds like you just want to swap you will have to swap both engine and dash harness, will have to set up something for the rear plug going to the rear of the vehicle and if you swap clusters your fuel gauge will read reverse
Apantozo
How would a picture help? I've replaced everything on the engine last fall and couldn't get it running with professional help. The distributor was replaced after I first discovered it was broken off the mount. That's where this nightmare started. And I put in several new CPS sensors, s new stsrter, ignition switch, starter relay, plugs, wires, cap rotor, and it still doesn't spark. I've come to the place where I boys '93 xj for the HO 4.0L and transmission. Anything that would help would be appreciated
cruiser54
Replacing parts is not a good diagnostic tool. But, it seems you have your mind made up. Good luck.

jdog
As I stated above you will have to put everything in, including the wiring. It troubles me that the professional help as you state didn't have you verify that the distributor was actually good or the coil or the fuse links. But as stated above good luck. I answered you original question above. If you decide to change your mind and figure the problem just let us know we will be glad to assist with the nessecary procedures
