What's the purpose for the spacer? Honest question I really don't know.

It goes between the frame and the steering box.  It basically just spaces the box out to align with the steering shafts.  The OEM spacer is made of aluminum and often cracks and can lead to some issues.  There are tons of aftermarket steel versions out there.

stock spacer are prone to cracking and failure in regards to being a spacer for fitment to frame. hd ones offer more rigid strength and support around the steering box for added reinforcement from more weight bigger tire and lifts forces that can cause issues from extra stress on the sector shaft and box itself. even as well as pulling the steering box off the unibody frame. it helps. good upgrade bang for buck. :L:
