But I’ve got tons to do to her! And I will be around here and there in the club. I couldn’t believe the original warranty guide came with it! Comunchy
This is sweet. I picked up an original warranty guide and owners manual for my year as well. Very cool that your truck still had that little time capsule with it.

You are the man, thanks for your tips and knowledge I’ll be using them ! I do have a question now! My brake fluid is pretty dark, and my E brakes are not exactly top notch. My rear end looks like it may have a leak, I’ll attach a photo! Do you think it’s worth it do do a disc install on the back? And what kind of headache am I going to give myself? eaglescout526
No problem! You could do a disk conversion but honestly you’ll still have the issue of brake fluid going black at some point which means something is eroding away in the lines. You could just bleed them until clean fluid and watch the fluid for it to turn black quickly. the E-brakes are based on adjustment in the equalizer(in front of the gas tank) and the life on the shoes in the drum brakes. looks like that rubber plug is leaking and not so much the diff. JStone
You’ve got a good point, hoping some TLC will help the brake lines last a bit longer, I’ll also do some digging into adjusting that equalizer, see if I can snug it up. are those rubber plugs pretty replaceable? Pete M
the link in my signature has the method for factory brake bleeding. it's different than most cars so you have to do all teh steps or you won't get all the old fluid out. also in there should be links to the disk brake conversion

eaglescout526
Back in the day there was a special tool to help with adjusting the E brake equalizer. I actually have it but it’s kinda a trial and error thing where if the truck rolls backwards after one adjustment, you’ll keep tightening till it stops. But check your drum shoes, they might be worn. 89 MJ
I think you should step back and decide what you want this truck to look like long term. We can help advise you from there. If you are going to do anything except keep the truck bone stock, or very close to it, then you should be looking at upgrading your whole axle. If you want to lift it and add big tires, you will need to change your brake lines anyways.

I just run into the dilemma of timing and priority. Seeing my brake fluid being that dark threw some red flags so I figured start with the simpler nessecary repairs then move up to the big boy upgrades. Ill probably do a flush of the lines, then check my options. On a less then 3" lift do you have to extend the brake lines? and if I'm going to do this in the future, ( I read a ton about the rear axle swap and the 8.8 being one of the simpler). Do any of you have this done on yours? worth the battle?
89 MJ
I do have the 8.8 swapped into my truck. I used one out of an Explorer Sport Trac, so it was about an inch wider than a regular 8.8 and has drums. It was very worth it because I upgraded gearing while I was at it. No brake line extension is necessary with 3” or lift. You could probably do an 8.8 swap in a weekend if you had all of the parts already.

Well that gives me hope, ill have to dive in a ton into the gearing cause I just don't know enough about it. Why is the gearing such an upgrade? Pete M
bigger tires make your engine work harder and it'll feel like you lost horsepower. lower gear ratios (higher numerically) give a mechanical advantage back to the engine. finding the right ratio for your tire/trans/engine combo can give your Jeep quite the kick in the pant when it comes to acceleration. If you are doing a 3” lift, you will probably be running 31” tall tires. You will want 4.10 gears then.

Pete M
with 31s he's going to want 4.56 at least. 4.10 was stock with 27" tires. whatever you do, don't regear a dana 35.

Lookin at the future for my rear axel, i've seen the replacement of the 8.8 a dozen times now and put a ton of logistical thoughts into it. I just don't know that I have the resources and machines to get it all done, let alone without making a huge mistakes. So I'm wondering if I were to have it professionally done, does anyone have insight to what new styles or manufactures would be best?
