Oizarod115
working under the hood tonight (ignition on or off, doesn't matter.) i noticed my battery is making a slight hissing noise... which gets me REALL ancy after hearing my toyota-tech teachers many first hand experiences with batteries blowing up from people doing dumb stuff and so on. i know he said SOMETHING about batteries that are making noise like that but i can't remember what, does anyone know anything? this is an optima red top, and it got the living HELL rattled out of it on the access trails to tellico this weekend (very bumpy 20mph rd)
Pete M
Optimas are a sealed battery. I'm guessing they shouldn't be hissing. But I seriously doubt an optima can explode. (Of course I've been wrong before.) Are you sure it's the battery making the noise and not something close by like a vacuum line or tire?

Are you sure it's the battery making the noise and not something close by like a vacuum line or tire? it is THE battery. tires are fine, and the truck was off. my stepdad hears it too and said the batteries they use at work do that and they get tossed outside (away from the shop) then discarded. its coming from the small little felt pad-like area near the negative terminal and the battery is less than 2 months old. and the alternator is less than 6months old and the cables are all new, so it shouldn't be overcharging. she read 12vish adn overcharged would be 14+
JeepcoMJ
I'd say return the battery for an exchange. being an optima, they will do it.

DirtyComanche
All batteries have some sort of pressure relief mechanism for the event of an internal failure. Well, almost, some don't (mercury batteries). So, yeah, I'd imagine it's having issues...

Oizarod115
did a test on it today with the FLUKE meters from school, gettin 13.2 on the battery just chillin, and 14.37 across the battery with the truck running so she's not overcharging, teach figures some sort of internal short, i'll swap my old battery back in and take the optima back.
