MJ Gears and Years

I have an 88 sport truck with Dana 35 and 3.07 in the rear. 4.0 inline 6 engine.

Went wheeling yesterday and had a blast but got stuck once had to winch out... But my buddy's wrangler on 35s had no issue. My axle just barely stuck on that rut. I'm running 33s.

I really didn't want to regear because I assume it's at least a grand but idk .

My CJ had factory 2.73 gears. I bought a set of 3.54 take outs that had built, but the owner wanted to go bigger. I got upgraded front and rear axles for $500. If you want to go bigger than 33" tires, 3.54 gears probably aren't deep enough, I would be looking for 4.56 or 4.88. I saw a pair within driving distance of me for $800. YJ, as I remember. Obviously they wouldn't be straight bolt in, but still would be an affordable way to go.

Edit: But, I don't think going with an 8.8 would gain you anything. It's so much bigger than your Dana 35 the ground clearance would probably be the same. It IS a better axle, though.

Dumb question but how are you guys finding these things? In the last year I've seen a wj Dana axle listed for 600 bucks.

What's a good price for this stuff?

If you can take the axle out yourself at the junkyard it's usually $100-150 around here.  Buying one already taken out it's going to be more.
