2.5L serpentine belt routing

Recommended Posts

Trying to confirm if my belt is routed correctly (no its not tight in this photo.)  The manual shows one way of routing it, but mine came with this routing instead. Which is correct?

Either way, I think the water pump has the correct rotation anyways.

While I do see what youre saying, you will find putting tension on the belt very hard to achieve with that routing you currently have. Do I spy an extra pully by the alt? Also while it seems very odd and semi dangerous, the belt does indeed go from the AC to the PS while being very very close to the coolant hose from the t-stat housing.

Suffice to say, the picture from the book is the correct routing. I am curious about the current set up.

Yes there is a tensioner next to the alternator pulley. Doesnt make sense since the manual shows how to adjust tension using the PS bracket.

(I broke the shroud putting in a new radiator last night)

Ok so I have the belt routed per the diagram now. I'm not sure what's going on with the tensioner either, it doesn't seem to have a purpose when the belt is routed per the above diagram. I looked just removing the tensioner but the alternator bracket is bolted to it.  In theory it allows for 3 locations to adjust belt tension; the alternator bracket, the tensioner, and the PS bracket.

I ended up tightening up the alternator and tensioner brackets and then just adjusting tension with the PS bracket adjuster.

BTW, I thought maybe this was something used on Jeeps without power steering and someone added it later, but my build sheet says mine came with power steering, so :dunno:

Oh well, its all good now. Thanks for the feedback!

You know what I bet that is. Someone got clever and decided to add that idler probably to put tension on the belt the way it is supposed to be, but then they changed the belt and forgot how it went and interestingly enough made it work. It really is clever and I could easily do that to mine if I wanted. Great pics though!

Are you sure about that. The way it came seems wrong.

EDIT: I now see the correct rotation. This time I used my good eye.

I had to look at that several times, too, because initially I thought he had reversed the water pump rotation.
