Waterpump shaft woes

Recommended Posts

I suppose it's possible. The part number matched correctly for an XJ, however.

Either way, the flange seems to be interference fit. I'm not sure why it would not stay seated, other than a defect.

The part is defiantly defective no mater which way it turns the flange should not come off.

Just to clear up what was said above .....the different rotation is determined by the belt not the model

a 2.5 pump will fit on a 4.0 and visa versa.....a pump with a serpentine belt turns counter clockwise....a pump that is driven in a v-belt configuration turns clockwise.

V belts did come with the 4.2 on old YJ's yes....but they also came on 2.5's in early XJ's and MJ's (my 87 has V's).....and with some suppliers they are the same part number.

Those flanges are a press fit onto the water pump shaft, and are designed to be an interference fit during manufacture.  It sounds like the one you got is defective.  I would expect something like that from Autozone or the like, but not from Mopar.

Then again, no brand is TRULY without a defect now and then.   You got lucky and won the defective part lottery from Mopar, I guess.
