Bobby anderton
Does anyone know the lengths and pitches of bolts for the AX15 bellhousing going into 4.0 wanting to upgrade to grade 8 and get rid of the e12 head.
87MJTIM
A parts manual shows the bolts are: The side bolts (9 O'clock and 3 O'clock) are 7/16" x 14 x 3 1/8" The top bolts are 3/8" x 16 x 1 7/8"
Pete M
my suggestion is to use studs for the top 2 bolts. they help as guides for re-installation of the transmission
JMO413
Studs are much easier for sure.
BeatCJ
Since I intend to do the same thing, do you use the same length studs, or add 3/8" or so for nuts?
Pete M
they can be a bit longer than the exact length of the old bolts. but I did that like 15 years ago so I'm not sure of the length I used. let's say the originals were 2", then add a half inch for the head and then another half inch for some slop (the studs go into the block a bit further than the bolts would have)
BeatCJ
Perfect, that's kind of what I thought. When I installed a ZF-5 in my '87 F-350, I built some tapered guide bolts for the 2 lowest holes. Got all the other bolts started, and swapped the right bolts in. Of course, a ZF-5 is quite a bit heavier. Even heavier than the iron cased T-19 I replaced.
