Torq_Shep
https://youtu.be/mUFeXk1Y-4M Any ideas? I spun all of the pulleys when the belt was off and they spun okay, nothing obviously wrong with them but they are super old =P My other thought is maybe timing chain slap? Noise does not seem to be dependent on engine RPM so I am hopeful that it is just an accessory problem.
strictlyxjs
How many miles? My xj has 335k around 280k the chain streched and the platic guide disingrated and it made a similar noise. I replaced it with cloyes timing set and chain and replaced thre guide. Been fine ever since.
Torq_Shep
136k. I am really thinking it may be the chain tbh. Its a non-interference so I may drive it for a few days after getting the cooling system worked out to see if I can pinpoint it.

The compressor might be worn internally and clacking a tiny bit. other than that, I’d maybe look at valves, it might be a low-tone lifter tick, but it’s not a rod knock, it’s not consistent enough to be one, at least in my opinion. that being said, it might be a bearing in the trans. I might have a bad countershaft bearing, and it makes a clunking nose when idling, with gets worse with rpm, similar sounding to that, just louder. Torq_Shep
No idea on the AC. I agree it does not sound like rod knock. Seems to be front of engine best I can tell so I am assuming timing chain or accessory bearing. Initially thought it might be flex plate but it does seem to be closer to the front. watchamakalit
I know you said you spun the pulleys but did you check the harmonic balancer? They will seperate with time. ComancheKid45
Did you run the engine with the belt off? That'll tell ya if it's accessories related or not.
Torq_Shep
Harmonic is brand new as it was bad when I bought the jeep. When I change the radiator, after an oil change and a bit of driving I may try removing the belt and running it just to see.

Especially the amount of resistance it takes to turn. There should be some as you should be spinning the impeller in fluid. Sounds almost like the impeller has come loose. Have you had any cooling issues? I would give the water pump shaft a good wiggle side to side and make sure the bearings are good. Also try taking a long bar (prybar or similar item works well). With engine running place one end of the bar on each belt driven item and place the other end in your fist with your ear up against it. You will be able to hear where the noise is coming from. I was taught this trick before mechanics had stethoscopes. It still works. Torq_Shep
I just got it up and running after it sat for atleast 8 years. It is overheating as the radiator has a massive leak and won't hold water very long. I haven't driven it farther than a few hundred feet before I realized that I was starting to get hot, turned around and parked it. It was making the noise as seen above before I even moved it out of the garage. But when I take the radiator out I am going to pull the belt off again and screw around with the pulleys to see if I can pinpoint it.
mjeff87
I had a timing chain slapping in my old 2.5L, and it didn't sound anything like that. It was a very rhythmic clica-CLACK-clica-CLACK sound that increased frequency with RPMs. To me, that doesn't sound chain related. I'd be thinking water pump impeller also. Or grab the A/C pulley and see if it wobbles any.
