WanderingAccountant
Hi all, I was attempting to diagnose a high idle upon ignition, and discovered that a silver hose connected to the base of my air filter hub had broken in place. I should probably replace, but I can’t figure out what this hose is called, or what better part to replace with. The other end seemingly snakes under the engine and looks very tricky to access! Please help!
eaglescout526
It is an exhaust hose. There is a vac switch right at the intake of the air box that shuts a door and allows the exhaust to send warm air into the intake rather than draw from the freezing cold air upon initial startup and warming of the engine. tugboat95
Lol. I just replaced mine today. Yours is not factory. Somebody found a duct and put it in. It is a ignition pre heater hose I think. What it does is sends hot air to the airbox to help starting. It is attached to a vacuum switch that operates as needed. At least that's what was explained to me. Look at my photo. I just pulled this one off a junker today and replaced my worn out hose tonight 89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd 4.0L 5 speed PukeGoat Factory Original

WanderingAccountant
Awesome fellas, thank you! Anyone know a good replacement part for this? The only one I could track down is the same flimsy metal coil, and I would rather have something more durable! Thanks you both for your responses. tugboat95
I got lucky and pulled it off a junkyard. Still in great shape I looked at all the local auto parts stores and couldn't find the proper size. I hadn't searched Grainger or McMaster type places yet. But when I was going to get serious about it they were my next places to search.89 ComancheEliminator2wd4.0L5 speed PukeGoatFactory Original
Ωhm
@tugboat95 yeah you got lucky. Even came with that protective wrap for the rubbing point.
WanderingAccountant
@tugboat95 that is seriously perfect! That was my problem; where the power steering system sits rubbed a hole into the cheap hose. @Ωhm that is awesome!! I measured the fitting and it seems like the 2in would fit better? Do you agree or am I not considering something?
Ωhm
I'd take measurement at the air box. Should/will be the same diameter used on the medal shroud over the exhaust manifold.

Ωhm
One more thing. O.D. of air box is I.D. of hose.
rmb2485
Just to clarify, that doesn’t actually send exhaust gas to the intake, it sends warm air from around the exhaust manifold to the intake. It just connects to a flange on the outside of the exhaust manifold.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
