Internal to External slave AX5

Recommended Posts

Swapping an out an internal slave 87 with an external slave 86 transmission.

Can I use the 87 master cylinder with the 86 transmission, or do I need to adapt an 86 to fit the 87?

I could also just swap the bellhousings and keep it internal, but it's an annoying setup.

EDIT

interesting that both the (supposedly) 86 and 87 bell housings look identical. Including a pivot for a clutch fork and same bolt pattern for an external slave. Is this normal? 86 seems like a really odd year, given my donor also came with 3.07s

84-86 XJ's and  86 MJ's had external. 87-92? or somewhere around there had internal then Chrysler switched them back to external. You should be fine to use either bell house.
This is all assuming you have a 2.5L and AX5
Hijack - do you know why AMC switched to internal?

The internal and external bellhousings are the same part, you just have to add the pivot ball and arm it if doesn't have it. The 86 clutch master bolts to the firewall differently than the 87. I was able to adapt mine when I did it, but I don't remember how I did it or if I had any issues. Its been too many years ago.

That's nice if they're still available. Of course then I just need to find a bell.

I ordered some parts yesterday to try to make what I have work but if not, I'll send them back and go this route I suppose. I've already got a new 87 master in the jeep and the clutch fork from an 86, so I ordered an 86 slave and hydraulic line and a bearing.

EDIT

I don't think it's worth my time @#$%ing around with matching stuff together if this is a surefire way to get it to work. I canceled my parts order and I'll go find a bell housing. Thanks!

The one JeepDriver has pictured is for 94-96 XJ's. It is still available new but chances are you're not going to want to pay the price of the kit.

Yeah I saw some high prices new online but a lot on ebay as well. Either way I'm sure the aftermarket support is better than for the 86. I'm not even sure the hydraulic line I ordered was going to be the full length, I figured I was going to end up fabricating lines.

No, the one I posted will fit any bell from '94 up..........my AX5 is out of a '98 Wrangler.

Chances are one he get's done F---ing around with 'aftermarket BS' he'll be glad to pay the price of the Mopar.

But, you can learn from my mistakes or your mistake..............choices choices..........

And........there's a simple solution to this problem too, barring that he does not have a legitimate peddle problem.

Same solution applies to all who are fitting a master to an MJ.

I've posted on this several times.

Waiting for photo.

Applies to you too, OP>

I already took your advice and canceled my order and I'm going that route, as I said above.

Just need a bell housing now. Lots on ebay.

Sorry I meant to post a link to the guy with the peddle in master problem it's right below yours

Oh gotcha.

Just to verify, a 94-02 AX5 bell housing should work fine between my 87 2.5 and my 86 AX5?

Then I'll go to the dealer for the hydraulic assembly

Ok. $19 at a yard an hour's drive from here, plus I'd have to pull the trans and everything in the gravel...

But I got one off ebay all cleaned up for $40 off a 99 AX5 so that works for me.

Thanks for the info
