Tail light clear coat or not

Hello all,

 

just wanted to get some feedback on clear coating the tail lights. I have a nos tailight set I’m about to install and have been thinking of clear coating them. Does anyone have any experience with doing this? Any recommendations? I don’t have access to 2k clear here on Guam but I do have an automotive acrylic lacquer clear or I can take it to the local body shop and have them shoot them. However, I really don’t trust them to handle these nos lights and don’t want anything to happen to them. Let me know your thoughts

I used to watch every episode of Nick's Garage.........until.........

 

A man pays $10-12K for a custom built engine, dyno tested. Nick pisses on it with a $8 rattle can.

I've nearly lost all interest and respect. 

 

 

Rattle can clear will yellow inside of a year. 

 

Don't ruin a $500 pair of tail lights.

Can take these to the body shop and get these cleared there also. The sun and salt air here is not kind on any exposed plastics

If you trusted them with your truck........you can trust them with a pair of lights.

I would have the body shop coat coat them. Make sure they don't bake them though. This made one set of mine bubble. The clear really makes them look good and a year later the set on my truck still look great.

Bake cycle on the paint booth.

They need to be clean.........clean clean clean. 

Grease and wax remover will damage the light. 

 

Use foaming window cleaner for a final wash. 

Do not touch without gloves. 

Do not heat. 

 

 

For reference to 'foaming window cleaner'- 

 

Skip to 6:20 or watch all of it.......it's good.

Dropped them off to get cleared already. I may use some wax also but ultimately wax just doesn’t hold up very long. Not sure how it would hold up long term on plastic also
