CODriver
Hey! I've recently acquired this full blue cluster from a 1986 XJ V6! However, I heard there are some compatibility issues. Is there anything important I need to know to get it installed?
CODriver
Also, how can I take the needles out the cluster? I'm trying to pull the speedometer out and its loose but the needle is stuck in place.
eaglescout526
Only compatibility issue is the speedo cable. 87-90 used a pinch type clip cable vs the ones 84-86 used. Otherwise it is plug and play. There are needle puller tools
CODriver
Got the needle out Now to roll the odometer... this may take a while.
eaglescout526
Looks like that cluster came out of a Jeep with cruise. Did you snag that too? Also just realized that cluster came from an XJ with the 2.8L the tach will never read right.
CODriver
Yeah, I won't use the tach anyways. Just nice to have all the gauges and looks better. I didnt take the cruise control, I can next time
eaglescout526
Snag it. It is nice to have with the 2.5L.
CODriver
Does the cruise control work with manual?
eaglescout526
Yes. Doesn't matter which trans you have. I have an auto set up in mine and it works just fine.
CODriver
Oh, I always thought cruise control was only for automatics. Thanks for the info
eaglescout526
Nope! That system is all plug and "where the hell does that go?".

eaglescout526
Damn. I really wish I thought of that one. That is so much better.
CODriver
Not the best photo but I took it apart and cleaned it up. The odometer is exactly 23,000 miles low. If the speedometer cable doesnt work, then I'll just swap in the speedo from my old cluster not the mot then
eaglescout526
Aaaaand I have tried that too. The Speedo isn't a direct swap either. If and when you get to removing your old cluster, look at the back of both of them and you will see how much different the mounting screw points are. You’ll need to get a cable for 84-86 as a swap for your cluster. Ill show you the backs of both clusters.
eaglescout526
84-early 87: 5/6th cluster late 87-90. Original idiot light cluster.
CODriver
Should I go back to the yard and get the original cable? It's still there.
eaglescout526
Sure. Make sure its in good shape and can be lubed. While your there you can get the cruise control stuff too. Actually...If you snagged the speed sensor you could just get a new speedo cable that is for cruise control and just use that as the cable just threads on to the speed sensor and since you have the adaptor already. I know it sounds confusing and it kinda is. Which ever is easiest for ya.
CODriver
Wait, is the thing poking out the back the speedo cable?
eaglescout526
The thing I think you are referring to is where the cable plugs in to
CODriver
Okay, thanks! Do you know where I can pick up an appropriate cable? The one from the car would be nice but the yard is only open on Saturdays, and I'd like to have this working sooner than that. I won't see my MJ for a month or two after this weekend

Answer: Because you pulled the needle off and screwed it up. Why did you pull the needle? YYou DON'T need to pull the needle to "clock" the odometer. CODriver
The needle was moved about when I cleaned it up. After cleaning, it was at 20, then I pulled it, and put it back at 20. I am a newbie when it comes to cars, so as time goes on I'll quit doing stuff the stupid way

Thanks for the info it works better with automatics, it keeps a constant speed by adjusting the throttle, shifting up or down when needed in a manual all it does is hold the gas pedal for you, the act of shifting gears kinda defeats its purpose
CODriver
Hey, I'm back with more questions (soo surprising). So I'm looking to get a new speedometer cable, and I see these pioneer ones. It says it fits the 1986 Cherokee, but then says that it also fits the 87 and 88 I'm wondering if you guys have any experience with these aftermarket cables. https://www.autozone.com/drivetrain/speedometer-cable/pioneer-speedometer-cable-ca-3004/1665_0_23377
